NOXIOUS WEEDS.

PATCHES IN MAIN STREETS.

COUNCIL TO TAKE ACTION.

Credit i>due to Cr. H. J. Hare for introducing, at the Borough Council meeting on Thursday last the subject of control of noxious, weeds on sections fronting the main streets. He made particular reference to the blackberry on-the section next to the Power Board’s office in Belmont Road, and he thought the trustee, who was living at Te Aroha, should be given notice to clear the area. Local residents apparently became accustomed to seeing the sections overgrown with noxious weeds, but there .was little doubt that strangers to the town would notice the areas, which must convey to them am unfavourable impression of Paeroa. Now that the borough could point with pride to the improvements made to the main streets by bituminising, and the good class of buildings .which had been erected, he thought scfaie steps Should be taken to compel owners to tidy up their vacant sections. He did not know if) it was a matter for the noxious weeds inspector, but So far as the section referred to was contcerned he moved that notice to clear the land and straighten up the fence be given. Cr. J. W. Silcock seconded.

The Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said he agreed with Cr. Hare’s remarks, but in his opinion the real objection he had to issuing an order on the owner of the section was that similar conditions .were obtaining elsewhere in the borough and he did not wish to penalise one owner in particular. Cr. Hare was of the opinion that notices to clear noxious weeds should be served on all owners of sections within the business area. There was nJo doubt, he said, that the place wanted cleaning up.

The Mayor agreed, and said that under the Act owners could not compelled to fence their sections. Attention was drawn by Cr. F. E. Flatt to the toi-toi bush and debris that was flourishing on the vacant section opposite the Power Board’s office. He thought that something should be done to tidy up that area. After a brief discussion it was decided to serve niotices on all owners of vacant sections fronting the main streets and situated between Victoria Street and Station Road.
