The' Finance Committee reported to last night’s meeting of the Paeroia Borough Council that the revenue received during the month totalled £3128 18s lid, which sum included £2192 refunded from loan accounts. After allowing for the payment of accounts amounting to £lO6O 15s 6d, the debit balance, exclusive of advances made to various loan accounts, was £215 10s sd.

Following upon represe/ntat’ons made, the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Society has received advice from the Auckland Society that 40 three-months-old. pheasants are to be forwarded to Paeroa about the middle of next month. The local society intends to hold a meeting in the near future to decide where the birds will be liberated.

The fire which has been burning since Monday last on the hills to, the east of Karangahake reached a great height on Wednesday night, the locality being lighted up for miles. The fire, which is believed to have started near Owharoa, travelled through the fern and ti-tree to Mr W. Ungley’s property, where fallen busk and a stiff easterly wind caused the flames to spread rapidly, and the fire crossed to Mr H. Williams’ property, where it burned unchecked throughout, the night. Yesterday morning a heavy pall of. smoke hung over the locality, but the flames had bee>ii, checked on reaching an area of newly sown grass.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council Cr. C. W. Parfitt, on behalf of the council, congratulated the clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, on having passed the county clerks’ examination. He understood that 230 candidates sat, .and that Mr Mahoney was one of the fifteen successful candidates. In jnoving the adoption of the Finance Committee’s report at the Paeroa Borough Council meeting last night Cr. F. E. Flatt said he noticed that the Thames Valley Electric Power Board had charged the council with 111 street tamps. He did not think that number was. correct, and he suggested that the town clerk should go into the matter, and if necessary a refund from the board should be applied for. In a. statement presented by the Finance Committee ajt the Paeroa. Borough Council meeting last night it was shown that credit balances existed in the following loan accounts : Swimming baths., £1686 OS lid ; 1920 street improvements, £296 ,15s 4d ; sewerage, £2O 18s sd; Criterion Bridge, £l2B 13s 6d ; £2OOO relief, of unemployment, 10s Bd,; council chambers, £4l 13s lid; domain improvermeiits, £2 12s lOd. The following accounts each carried debit balances : £4500 improvements to main streets loan (not raised), £ll2o' 17s Id; house sewerage conlnections loan, £493 Is 2d. Salle of Drapery Stock opening in shop lately occupied by the Dolly Varden, Belmont Road. Men’s, ladies.’ and children’s ware at bedrock prices must be sold. Sale is only being conducted to-night from '5 o’clock and to-morrow morning. The public are invited to avail themselves of the unique opportunity to buy cheaply. Orders for box suits a speciality.*
