BOROUGH WORKS.

PROGRESS DURING THE MONTEL COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The following report. on the work carried out in the borough during the month was submitted by the Works Committee to the Paeroa Borough Council meeting last night:— “Since the last meeting maintenance work has practically been the scything of grass on footpaths, cleaning water channels and fire hydrants, and chipping grass on main street footpaths, including lower Belmont Road and part of Taylor’s Avenue. ‘The exceptionally dry weather, combined with very fasit traffic, is having a serious effect on the. mostused streets, and considerable dalnr age has already been done. It has been noticed during the past week that the 2%in metal in the bp*dy of, the street on Taylor’s Avenue is being torni up, and, of course, much greater havoc has been wrought on the newly constructed streets. This necessitated an amendment to the proposals for bituminising work where sealing was provided for, involving extra bitumen and metal, but every possible effort is being made- to keep costs down to an absolute minimum.

“The weather has been favourable for bituminising work, especially the slurface sealing work, and some progress has been made. The approach to the new traffic bridge on the town side has been completed with the exception of the footpaths. The work wais done on the penetration system, and the area was 2281 square yards, equal to three-fifths of the area of the portion of Belmont Road d°ne on the same method some years ago.

“Arney Street frptai the main street to the domain corner has also been reconstructed and bituminised on the penetration method. The balance of Arney Street and the whole of Thames Roald (with, the exception of the racecourse hill), a distance of over one mile, has been cleaned and bituminised in two colat-seal work.

“On very hot days it is, not possible to roll penetration work except early in the mornings, and showery weather does not entail such long Anterrup'' tio'ns cn penetration work as compared with surface-sealing. It is therefore proposed to push on with tile streets which have to be surfacesejaled, leaving Puke Road until later in the season. A start has been made on the Te Arolia Road, .with a view to completing this section to the boundary. ’ “During last month a serious break* down) occurred on the roller, namely, the stripping of teeth on the big gear wheel, with the bending of the intermediate shaft and the breaking of its bush. Repairs cost about £35, and the machine was laid up for about one week. Through the courtesy of the Ohinemuri County Cpluncil and their engineer, Mr E. Shaw, we obtained the use of their roller and were able to proceed with our work. “Swimming Baths.—The excavation for the bath has been completed and the excavation for the drain is well in hand. Material is on the job for the concrete work, and a stairt has already been made with the preparation for this work.

“Sewerage.—The sewer extension in Kennedy Street has been completed, and connections Have been laid to three houses at the top.”
