THE CRITERION BRIDGE.

STRUCTURE OVER OHINEMURI. COMPLETION IN EIGHT WEEKS. The Public Works Department expects' to complete the construction of the Criterion bridge, 300 ft in length, over the. Ohinemuri River - at Paeroa within the next eight weeks. The erection of the bridge was made necessary by the effect of the stop-banks to cope with the; encroaching volume of water. The estimated cost was £12,280', allocated between the Waihou and Ohinemuri Rivers improvement fund £4030, Public Works Department fund £5250, Pae-. rpa Borough Council £1650, and tire Ohinemuri County Council £1350. The estimate will be slightly exceeded, owing to unexpected difficulties in pile-driving caused by a peculiar and unusual formation encountered in the river bottom. This consisted of a fine, hard, dense material, which resisted all attempts at penetration until special apparatus was obtained. The bituminising of the approach on the Paeroa side has been completed under the personal supervision of Mr W. Marshall, Mayor of Paeroa, who is now devoting much time to such matters.
