WORKMAN’S LEG BROKEN. STEELWORK SLIPS ON BARGE. . Shortly before 11.30 o’clock yesterday morning a serious accident befell Mr W. Turner, an employee of the Public Works, Department, on the Criterion traffic bridge over the Ohinemuri River at Paeroa. It appears that Mr Turner, with others, ■was assisting to lift a steel transom from a barge on the river by means of a steam winch on to the bridge level. In order to- secure a piece of rope Mr Turner stepped in between two transoms, when by sheer bad luck one of the transojns, weighing about 16cwt, slipped and pinned him by the leg, fracturing it just above the ankle. .
The injured man was attended to by Dr. Fogg, and afterwards was. conveyed by car to the Thames Hospital, he is reported to be progressing satisfactorily.
Mr Turner, who has been with the department for some years, is looked upon as. a reliable and careful workman, and the accident yesterday was purely accidental. Of all the hundreds of tons) of steelwork that has been handled In connection with the erection of the bridge this is the first serious accident that has occurred. The two. transoriis which were raised yesterday we ; re the last of 39 required for the bridge.
