An ingenious exerse was put forward by a defendant when h- was charged in the Dunedin Police Court with having sold a shilling’s worth of chocolates on a recent Sunday. The purchaser, unfortunately, was a constable, and defendant’s counsel said that his client wished to plead that he thought the purchaser intended to consume! the ch-ccplates on the premises. When the constable had revealed his identity a table and a, Chair wqre pointed out to him as there for the convenience of customers. The Bench was unabe to accept the excuse, and the shopkeeper was fined.
