WOMAN'S ATTEMPTED SUICIDE.
STRUGGLE WITH CONSTABLES.
Three Vaucluse constables, endqav-
ouring to stop a married woman from throwing herself over The Gap, at Sydney, nearly lost their own lives. The woman fought furiously, biting, kicking, and punching, and witih each wriggle, and turn getting nearer the edge of the cliffs.
Suddenly rocks began to slide away under their feet, and one con-
stable, with a last desperate tug, succeeded in dragging the woman clearBoth she and her captors were within a foot of the cliff’s edge. jL. Vaucluse police were advised by ’ telephone that a young woman had centered the enclosure near The Gap about 4'.30 p.m. She 'had travelled On the Watson’s Bay ferryboat, and her behaviour on board caused misgivings. ■A passenger followed 'her, and when he saw her get through the fence; at The Gap he rang the police. Constables Stichell, Hollingsworth, and Fogarty motored quickly to the enclosure, and saw the woman peering over' the edge at the foaming waters below. The “drop” at this particular spot is 150 .feet, and death is sw'ft and certain. The constables rushed the woman, who was gathering herself for a leap. One caught hold of her arm and
tried to drag her back. The, woman then commenced her frenzied struggle. She kept crying out, “What right /'r’havei you to interfere. Let .me go, I tell you, Im going over.” After the police, succeeded in getting her back to safety they bore marks, of the struggle, as the woman’s fingernails were long. When taken to the Vaucluse Police Station and questioned the; young woman said that she 'was unhappy. Shq had quarrelled with her ihusband, and had decided to take her life. She was still resentful at police !n--terference, and was later taken to the reception house.
