REMARKABLE SUNSPOT.

LARGER THAN THE EARTH.

SOLAR ACTIVITY AT MAXIMUM.

A remarkably large sunspot has been visible on the sun’s surface since the end of last month, and it is now close to the centre of the disc. This spot is so larg- that it is prominent to the naked eye, when the sun is observed through a dark or smoked glass. The presence of a sunspot of a size easily eclipsing that of| the earth is by no means unusual, but the large sunspot at present visible, is indeed remarkable. Its presence may be attributed to the fact that the maximum solar activity occurs about this time, when spots are larger and appear more frequently than at other stages of t'he solar cycle. Although ■ scientists, are, not agreed on the actual connection between individual sunspots and terrestrial magnetic and electrical conditions, it is widely agreed that the solar cycle of change is reflected in a. number of ways on the earth, notably Jn auroral displays, and it is quite possible that the central passage of sucfi a large spot may be reflected in terrestrial meteorology.
