POULTRY NOTES.
AMONG THE STOCK. WORK TO BE DONE. The breeding season for f,owls now being over, all male birds should be separated from the hens, which will lay as well, if not better, without the males. Any cocks ,that show signs of not being serviceable; for future breeding should be disposed of,' at once ; it is seldom that a male bird can be depended upon for breeding purposes after the third year, and tihe keeping of such stock means a continued drain on the profits. The aim of the poultry-keeper - should be to never have on the plant a bird which is not paying its way. No attempt should be made to rear weaklings. Constitution is the base of disease-resistance and heavy-pro-ducing stock. It is therefore obvious that to waste time over a dedicate chicken is not only inviting an outbreak of disease but is decidedly unprofitable. There should be no delay in marking the feet of chickens for age-deter-mination. It is the only means whereby the common mistake of disposing of a young profitable bird and retaining an bld unprofitable one may be obviated w'.ith certainty. Sweethearts are having a bad time with this daylight-saving. It is truly pitiable to see them wandering about the riverbanks, waiting for the shades of night that refuse to fall. So they stroll disconsolatelj' on, looking mightily uncomfortable, the boy not knowing whether to take her arm or heir waist, and the girl inclined not to let him do either. "But it’s so light, Bill,” one can almost hear her say. Th© real tragedy will come in midsummer, when couples will have to meet about ten o’coclk at night to avoid the public’s eyo, In the meantime, what about a plea for bravery in love ? Just put your arm round her, and let the rest of the world go hang!—Christchurch Sun,
