A farewell evening is to be tendered the Rev. Father W. C. J. M. Dunphy at the Gaiety Theatre on Wednesday night. Father Dunphy, who has been parish priest at Paeroa during the past eight years, leaves to take over the parish of Otahuhu on Thursday next.
The main highway between Paeroa and Auckland is in good order at 1 present, and during the week-end a large number of motorists made the journey. On Saturday two char-a-bancs, conveying the members of the Auckland Orphans’ Club, made good time on the trip to Paeroa, The return journey was accomplished yesterday morning without, incident.
Owing to the removal of a pole carrying high tension wires the supply of electricity was cut off in parts of Paeroa for some hours yesterday. The removal of the pole was necessary owing to the making of a new entrance to Fraser Street from Normanby Road. The power was restored shortly after four o’clock in the afternoon, so far as residences were concerned but some of the street lights were not switched on at the main tower in Normanby Road until after 9 p.m.
A start was made by the borough workmen this morning to remove the loose stones and rubble from the triangle near the post office. The work of bituminising this area is to be undertaken as soon as weather permits.
As from this afternoon, the Paeroa d'strict high school dental clinic will be closed until after the New Year. To-morrow morning the dental nurse, Miss L. C. Ellis leaves for the department’s sub-base at Ngatea. From there Miss Ellis will visit the Kaihere school, where an inspection of the children’s teeth will he made and such treatment as is necessary giveai, after which similar work will be performed at Ngatea. With the, removal of Mr F. G. Stockwell 8.D.5., from Ngatea and the establishment of a clinic at Paeroa, Ngatea ‘has been made a sub-base and is to be worked from Paeroa in future.
A number of members of the Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club attended the official opening of tlie Te Aroha Club’s courts on Saturday afternoon. A dance was held in the evening, and those who made the trip speak in glowing termi of the hospitality that was accorded them.
Parts of the Hauraki Plains West water supply area will have water available within the next few days, but delays in the receipt of materials will prevent the water being available to districts south of Rawerawe until about Christmas. It is expected that the pipes necessary to link up the reticulation will arrive in Auckland about December 5.
On Saturday a heavy pall of smoke hung over the town, due to swamp fires on parts of the Hauraki Pla'ns. Yesterday the wind veered round to a more northerly direction and the atmosphere, cleared somewhat. After sunset last night heavy clouds, banked up in the sky and during the night and early this morning several heavy showers of rain fell, which have had a very refreshing effect generally.
Attention is directed to the Railway Department’s advertisement appearing in this issue regarding the issue of holiday excursion tickets t.o Auckland in connection with the Auckland Metropolitan A. and P. Show on December 2 and 3.
