PIG MARKETING.
PLAINS CO-OPERATIVE SCHEME.
CONTRACTS ARRANGED.
Enthusiastic support is being accorded the scheme for exporting pigs by farmers of the Hauraki Plains. Meetings were addressed by Mr Judd, chairman of the N.Z. Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, ■ at Kaihere and Waitakaruru on Monday last and at Turua yesterday, and at each place the scheme was adopted and a committee appointed to organise the district.
At Kaihere there were 16 present, and the committee appointed was: Messrs T. Lynch (secretary), L. R. Mclndoe, E. W. Harris, E. W. Cowdrey, A. Walters, A. B. Nolan, and WBenny. At a subsequent committee •meeting a contract was let; for the cartage of pigs to Paeroa station. Two loads will probably leave on Monday next.
At Waitakaruru 35 farmers present, and the committee appointed was : Messrs A. Wylie (convened 1 ), C. W. Harris, W. Stretton, F. Pinchess, C. Coxhead, F. Sexton, and G. French. Pipiroa farmers present indicated that there was a chance of a committee being formed in their district, possibly with the idea of working in with Ngatea.
Yesterday morning Mr Judd addressed a meeting at Turua, but as this is a cheese-making district, where comparatively few pigs are fattened, the attendance; was smaller than was expected. The committee appointed was: Messrs P. R. Henry, J. W. Treadaway, J. A. Gv Wilson, R. Baker, and P. A. Dryden.
To-day Mr Judd will travel in the special train to Waharoa and back to Hamilton with the Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amw Secretary of State for the Dominions, for the purpose of explaining the marketing scheme to him.
The Ngatea committee explained the scheme to a meeting of farmers on Monday evening, there being a b'g attendance. It was unanimously decided to give the scheme wholehearted support, and it was decided to support the efforts oft the Hamilton executive in its endeavours to obtain a Government subsidy on exportable bacon. The committee reported having accepted the tender of Mr H. Sparrow to transport pigs to the Paeroa station at 2s per head. The contractor will receive 6d a head from the association for trucking and marking the pigs. After some discussion on the insurance against loss of pigs in transport between Ngateja and Paeroa, it was eventually decided that a charge of 6d a head be made and given to the carrier, who would then bear the burden of any losses. It was also decided to ask that the cost of cartage and ’insurance be deducted by the Hamilton office from the farmers’ cheques and paid direct to the carrier. The first trucking from Ngateia will probably be made; on Monday next. • Farmers from Ngatea agreed to assemble their pigs at the saleyards, and the Hopai settlers agreed to discuss the proposal to erect loading pens at the corner of their road. Messrs D. Dalgety, J. Motion, ano W. Jones were .added to the committee.
