WAIHOU RIVER WORKS.
STOP-BANKING NEAR NETHERTON.
RAPID PROGRESS BEJNG MADE/ Rapid progress has been made by the Public Works Department’s two suction dredges with the Waihou River stop-banking near Netherton. The bank now extends for a mile and a half down the river from the old cheese factory, the end bedng about three-quarters of a mile above the Netherton ferry. The electrically driven dredge is now operating on the Hikutaia, side of the river a little above the ferry, and to-day the steam dredge was shifted dowji-stream to complete the stretch to the ferry. This machine will work continuously day and night, and the electric dredge will continue working two ten-hour shifts. The stop-bank crosses the road at Netherton, and again about 60 chains down-stream. Eventually the road will be on top of the bank, but the ■metalling is to be deferred until the bank consolidates, and in the meantime the traffic will cross the bank and follow the old road alongside the riverbank. At present all traffic is diverted through Fisher’s and School roads. The stop-bank is of sand, and is about 9ft high and from 30ft to 40ft wide.
