RIFLE SHOOTING.
FORMATION OF PAEROA CLUB. WELL-ATTENDED MEETING. A meeting convened for the purpose of considering the prospect of forming a defence rifle club was held at the Drill-shed last night. There was a large., attendance, and Mr E. Edwards was chiosen to preside.
In accepting the position of secretary Mr H. Simmonds, convener of t.he meeting, said that he would be pleased to accept the position for 12 months only. He ,was very keen on getting the club established, and he believed when that was done it would be well supported and prove a source of interest to members.
After the regulations relating to the formation of a rifle club had been discussed it was moved' by Mr ABridge, seieonded by Mr R. W. Medhurst, and carried, that a rifle club, to be known as the Paeroa Defence Rifle Club, be formed.
OFFICERS. The following were elected officebearers for the ensuing twelve months: Patrons. Mussrs A. M. Samuel, MIP. and E. W. Pori itt; president, Mr E. Edwards ; deputy-president, Mr P. R. Hubbard; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. Simmonds ; auditor, Mr W. L. Lawrence ; handicapper, Mr H. Simmonds ; selectors, Messrs N. C. Busby, H. Simmonds, and A. A. Jenkinson ; committee, Messrs R. I. Wells, A. Bridge, A. A. Jenkinson, W. A. Reid, R. W. Medhurst. The position of range officer was left in the hands of the committee to fill. , CLUB COLOURS. It was decided that th© club’s colours be the colours of the Hauraki Regiment (pale blue), subject to the approval of the National Rifle Association. , SUBSCRIPTION. It was decided that the annual subscription be fixed at £1 for active and honorary members, payable on or before December 1. RULES. It was resolved that the drafting of rules be left in the hands of the committee, and that a. general meeting be called to consider the matter at a later date. GENERAL. It was reported by thei secretary that every assistance would be readily forthcoming from the area officer. Lieut. V. J. Innes, N.Z.S.C,, who had stated that he would apply for financial assistance towards putting the range in order provided working beps were formed to carry out work on the butts.
It was decided that all members who could make it convenient should report at the range at 2 p.m. to-mor-row.
In acknowledging a vote of thanks at the conclusion of the meeting the chairman said he was pleased to think that a club had been formed. The enthusiasm of those present augured well for the future success of the club. He trusted that the enthusiasm shown would not lag, and that the members would take an interest in the club an d P us h * ts interests - A defence rifle club was the only avenue open to those who had been keen volunteers, te,rritorials, and those who had experienced active service to do something towards defence citizenship. Rifle-shooting was a clean, healthy, manly sport, deserving of every support. He was proud to be elected the club’s first president, and hoped the club would be successful and make its name in the district.
