PLAINS COUNTY COUNCIL
PROGRESS DURING THE MONTH. REPORTS BY STAFF. The following reports were received by the Hauraki Plains County Council at its monthly meeting on Thursday last:— CLERK’S REPORT. The clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, reported as follows :— “Main Highways subsidies diaimed but not yet paid, amounting to £1947, have been credited to the; various ridings in the statement. “Arrears of Rates.—Final notices to ratepayers in arrears, threatening proceedings for rate unpaid after 17th inst., we,re distributed, but so far with little effect.
“Balance-sheet, 1926-27.—This has been received from the Audit Department, and a special meeting will be necessary to settle same.
“Kerepeehi Roads Loan.—The full amount authorised, £5OOO, has been raised for this work.
“Netherton Roads Loan, 1925.—The Bank of New Zealand has released £2o'oo worth of these, debentures from hypothecation, and this number has been sold, and the money is now available for the work.
“The overdraft at the bank on No. vember 1, 1927, was £76’58 10s, with commitments of £1560 5s 3d for this meeting. “Receipts totalled £575 13s Id, being £320 15s lOd from rates and £254 17s 3d from miscellaneous sources including £52 10s from house rents, £4O 4s from motorists, £5l 9s 8d from.Komata ferry, £44‘ 2s sd. from Pipiroa ferry, and £lO 17s 6d from dog tax, etc..”—Adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Th© engineer, Mr F. Basham, reported as follows :— “ Main Highways.—All roads have been patched where necessary, and graded in as far as plant was available. The stopbank work at Netherton being carried out by the Public Works Department has necessitated a temporary deviation round by School and Fishers’ Roads.
“Coxheads Filling.—The contractor has made satisfactory progress with the earthworks. Contractor for bridge; work has material on ground and is ready to commence construction.
“Mangatarata Bridges.—The timber for these; bridges is to hand and the contractor has delivered most of it on sites.
“Pekapeka Road.—Rpad has been graded and is partly formed in readiness to receive mejtal. Tenders for carting same close to-day. “Bitumen Roads.—Necessary patching on the Hauraki and Piako Roads has been done. Considerable work is required on the Orchard East Road, This has been held over pending fresh supplies of chips. “ Tractors and Graders.—Three plants are now working. The following roads have been disced and levelled : Pekapeka-River road, NgateaPuhanga Canal Island'road, and Ngataipua, Moeihau, Kean”s, Shelly Beach, Hopai West, Miranda, and Mangatarata roads. One plant is now working out towards Patetonga, one is returning to Pekapeka Road, and the other will be returning t.o main highways. “Patetonga Rnding Metalling.— In company with the Public Works Works and Land. Drainage Eningeers I inspected sources of supplies of metal at Maukooro, and in Reid’s property at Patetonga. The latter is being prospected! by the Lands'Department.”
