SPEEDING MOTORISTS.
FOURTEEN CAUGHT IN TWO DAYS. BUSY PLAINS INSPECTOR. In the course of his report to the Hauraki Plains County Council on Thursday last, the inspector (Mr R. H. Cameron) stated that seven cars had been caught exceeding the speed limit on October 28, and on the following day seven were caught exceeding the 15 miles limit between tihe two bridges at Waitakaruru. In reply to a question the chairman said that the .15 miles limit was imposed on account of the nearness of the Waitakaruru school. As the offenders had been caught on a Saturday morning he was of the opinion that the council should not prosecute. The placing of the speed limit notice boards did not entirely conform to the by-laws, which restricted the speed within 50 yards of all schools to 10 miles an hour and to 15 miles an hour through townships. It appeared that the time had come when the by-laws should be revised.
Councillors expressed the opinion that in this instance prosecutions should not be made. Cr. Mayn gave notice of motion to reconsider the by-laws, and it was decided that pending the review the prosecutions be not ■made.
Cr. Reid asked that the engineer and the clerk report on the factors to be taken into consideration when fixing speed limits on various classes of roads. This was agreed to, members pointing out that conditions had altered since the by-laws were framed.
