BOWLING AND TENNIS. OPENING AT HIKUTAIA. Perfect weather prevailed on Saturday afternoon, when the Hikutaia Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Clubs formally opened for the 1927-28 season. There was a. large attendance of visitors, as well as local members, and a thoroughly enjoyable, afternoon was spent. This season’s president of the Bowling Club (Mr E. Elliot) extended a hearty welcome to the visitors and expressed the, hope that they would enjoy the afternoon’s play, and also, at a later date, that the inter-club matches would be looked forward to with interest. He said that as president he had a hard row to hoe to follow in the footsteps of Mr W. H. Alley, who had held the position for four seasons, but with the co-operation of the members it would be his endeavour to make the new season a memorable one, and as pleasurable as, former seasons. A happy afternoon was spent on the, greens, which were in sple.ndid playing condition and the subject of many congratulatory remarks from the visitors. Nearly 200 persons assembled for afternoon tea, which was served from the pavilion by the ladies,’ committee.
At the conclusion of play the officials from the visiting clubs thanked the president and members for the hearty welcome and hospitality received, and expressed the hope that the clubs would enjoy a successful and happy season. An exchange of cheers concluded a memorable afternoon’s pleasure.
