NGATEA. SWIMMING club formed. With the idea of improving the ' meagre facilities for swimming in the Piako River at Ngatea, catering for good swimmers, encouraging inexpericened bathers'. and training members in the art of life-saving, a ' swimming club was formed at Ngatea last Tuesday, evening at a wellattended meeting called by Mr J. E. Reed to disteuss the project. It, was recognised that before progress could be made it would be necessary to get the permission of the Lands Drainage Depai-tment to cross the stop-bank, level a landing place, and erect a small breastwork. A committee comprising Messrs J. E. Reed ,S. McKerchar, and R. C. Abel was appointed to inspect the river between the bridge and the mouth of the canal with the object of selecting the most suitable site, s The club will then approach t,he lands drainage engineer. It is hoped to have a dressing enclosure, springboard, and float provided. The following officers weire appointed : President, Mr J. E. Reed; vicepresidents, Messrs E. L, Walton, H. Dent, and W. P. Wylde ; secretary, Mr S. McKerchar; captain, Mr R- C. •*Abe.l; vice-captain, Miss L. Luks; committee, Misses J. Rountree, T. McKerchar, Messrs H. Kirkman, K. Clare, F. Franks, and McDonald. Subscriptions were jlxed at 5s for gentlemen, 3s for ladiest, and 2s for children l under 15 years.
