VETERINARY CLUB.

. HAURAKI PLAINS BODY, c — 7 MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The executive of thei Farmers’ Veterinary Club met at Ngatea on Thursday, Ms G. T. Davidson presiding jve-r Messrs C. H. Waite, C. E. W. Martin, G. Phillips, R. Burke, and CA. Gibson (secretary). The surgeon, Mr J. Costello, attended. SURGEON’S REPORT. The surgeon, Mr J. Costejlo, reported having attended 200 casesi during September and October. These included cases pf calving, foaling, blood scour, phrentis of brain, garget, parturient fever, antinomycosis pneumonia, foot rot, redwater poisoning, ...and paratigiss. Thei demand f° r medi- •- cines had increased during the last two monthsi Attention was drawn to the services rendered the club by Messrs Phillips, Burke, and several cream-cartage contractors, who had

delivered medicines.. Reporting verbally, Mr Costello ' stated that the position in regard to siwine was very much improved.. Pigs were better this year than in any previous season. There, was a great increase in the amount of udder trouble in cows, and he was of opinion that the matter was very serious and necessitated a thorough investigation by a competent person. The club should take up the matter of getting the Government experts on to the job. He was treating the cows to the best of his veterinary knowledge, but he would candidly admit that he was meeting with little success and that the disease was beyond him. Thg seriousness of the malady could be gauged by the fact that in one herd of 30 cow’s 18 werei affected. The president stated that samples of the milk could be sent to the Government laboratory at Wallaceville by the settlers, who would be given full information as to the re&ults of the analysis. The surgeon stated that samples / had been sent to Wallaceville, and the ■** report had advanced contagious mammitis. However, the cows had recovered, which proved that they were not suffering from thQ disease, stated. Mr Burke asked if the club could not make to the Government to undertake investigations! jr This was supported by members, r who agreed that the matter was the most serious one confronting the district for many years. It was decided to make urgent representations. APPRECIATION OF SERVICES. ■A vote of appreciation was accorded Mr C. H. Waite, who had acted as secretary during the illness of Mr Gibson. FINANCIAL POSITION. The secretary reported that outstanding accounts totalled £146 and thei cash in hand £3B.A long discussion ensued concerning the outstanding subscriptions, which exceeded £4OO, and it was decided that the accounts be placed in the hands of the club’s solicitor for enaction forthwith. ■ Iressrs Burke and Waite advocated T adopting a system of collecting subscriptions through orders on thq Dairy Company. A special general > meeting could be held, if thought advisable, to make this method the recognised manner of paying subscriptions. It .was pointed out that the surgeon’s car had outlived its usefulness and was costing the surgeon a huge amount for maintenance. Until the surgeon’s wages were paid right up to date he could not be expected to uurchase a new, car. It affect&d the club, as at any time the car was likely to refuse further duty. Mr ,Wai.te moved that a general meeting of members be called to discuss the working and financial position of the club. Mr Martin seconded. Mr Schultz spoke, against the motion, contending that it was unnecessary and showed a weakness on the part of the executive. Mr Waite said that the only weakness was that the executive did not prea(s for the payment of subscriptions at the beginning of the- year. ■ The motion was defeated on the votes of Messrs Burke, Phillips and Schultz, Mr Waitd being the only supporter. Mr Burke repeated his suggestion ' of getting members to sign an order on the cream cheques, and offered to put in several days visiting members. Messrs Schultz and Martin made similar offers. On thQ motion of Mr Schultz the matter of collecting subscript'ons was ' left to Mr Burke to organise, and it was decided that a special meeting of the executive be held at an early date to go further into the matter.
