LAST WEEK-END.

WEATHER SPOILS HOLIDAY. HAILSTORM ON LABOUR DAY. Monday (Labour Day) passed off very quietly at Paeroa, and the day was observed as a close holiday by the townspeople. Unfortunately, the weather was very unseasonable during the weekend. Although no rain fell on Saturday, thej sky was overcast and the weather threatening. During Saturday night a stiff north-westerly wind arose, and by early morning it had veered round to due west, and heavy showers fe<ll throughout Sunday. '

Monday morning dawned fine, with bright sunshine, but there we,re several heavy showers of rain. Shortly before mid-day the sky darkened and there was a heavy hailstorm, lasting about ten minutes, and heavy rain followed. From then on the weather cleared, and the afternoon and evening were fine, although bleak and cold.

Owing to the conditions that prevailed tennis players were unable to use. the local courts. The only attractions were a cricket match and a bowl’hg tournament on Monday.

There; appeared to be a general exodus of people from Paeroa during the week-end. Several parties went through to the beaches) at Waihj, or Thames, and races at Te Rapa and Cambridge attracted a fair number of local and district patrons.

Despite the number of people who travelled by motor-car, the railway was well patronised. On Friday the first morning rain from Paeroa carried 19 passengers, and the race special 23 passengers ; on Saturday the first train took 12 passengers for the Waikato, and the special train 23. On Monday the race train took 42 local passengers to Cambridge and 38 to the athletic sports and bowling tournament at Te Aroha. The town was busy in the evening after the travellers returned from their outings, and the picture theatre was well patronised.
