SUCCESS OF POLL.

MAIN STREETS SCHEME CARRIED. BETTER ROADS ASSURED. The poll taken yesterday on the proposal submitted by th® Paeroa Borough Council to raise the sum of £4500 for the purpose of the. reconstruction of main streets was carried by over an eight-to-one majority. The result of the poll, which was announced by the town clerk (Mr W. C. Alexander) at 7.12 o’clock last night, showed that the voting was 281 for the proposal and 35 against. Of the 608 ratepayers, on the roll 3.16 exercised their privilege, which, is considered a very satisfactory percentage when the number of absentee ratepayers is considered. STATEMENT BY MAYOR. In an interview His Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) said that he wa ? naturally pleased to know that the work started was to be completed in a satisfactory manner. The result of the poll was taken as a vote of confidence in the council, and particularly in the main roads scheme which 1 the council had brought forward. Paeroa would undoubtedly have good main streets at a cost of fifty per cent, reduction in maintenance, charges. He expressed his best thanks for the willing help so generously given by many ratepayers, the, Press, and for the general and intelligent interest in the question. The overwhelming majority and thei large poll indicated that the people understood and appreciated the position.

Speaking personally, the Mayor said he was greatly' encouraged by the numerous instances during the last week or two in which ratepayers had taken the trouble to express satisfaction at. the work and that the men who were employed were giving good service. No effort would be spared to carry tfie work to a successful conclusion at the, earliest possible date, and burgesses could rest assured that they would receive full value for the confidence so tangibly expressed and th® authority given the council.
