THAMES HOSPITAL.

MONTHLY BOARD MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wasi held on Monday, the chairman (Mr W. E. Hale) presiding over Messrs P. E. Brenan, C. W. Kennedy, C. W. Parfitt, E. L. Walton, A. R. Robinson, C. W. S. Flett, J. W. Danby, and G. Tonge (secretary). HOSPITAL RENOVATIONS. The technical inspector, Department of Public Health, advised that hq would be visiting Thames in the near future and would then discuss proposed hospital renovations. HOSPITAL SEWERAGE.

The Inspector of Health, Thames, wrote pointing out that the board had made certain omissions in drawing up the drainage contract for the hospital and adjacent buildings. The chairman riaid it was important that the omissions had been made in the specifications. He could not understand why the, matter had been overloooked ; probably there had been too many fingers in the pie. To Mr Walton the chairman said that thei specifications were prepared by the Health Department, and it was, now trying to rectify its own mistakes. The work had since been put in hand, but he; had no idea of the additional cost.

On the chairman’s motion it was decided to call tenders to connect the office with the borough sewerage; sysr t,em.

ACCOMMODATION FOR THE AGED. The Tauranga Hospital Board wrote advising that it was experiencing great difficulty in providing accommodation for several aged people who were really not hospital cases, but had been admitted as patients owing to the fact that the board had no old people’s home in the Bay of Plenty. The Director-General of Health had been communicated with on the subject, and he had suggested that some arrangement might be made with the Thames Board. The Tauranga Board sought to have two male and two females admitted at Thames if possible, and undertook to pay the charges. The chairman suggested that the letter be held over until the November meeting, pending further inf ci mation being forwarded relative to the age of the people desiring to be admitted and the nature of infirmities. This course was adopted. In answer to Mr Kennedy the chairman said that the Tauranga Board had been advised of the charges per diem at the district homes. BENEVOLENT LEAGUE. The Hauraki Ladies’ Benevolent League forwarded a,number of accounts and applied for a donation of £lO, which Was granted. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £2360 19s 6d were passed for payment. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT. The resident superintendent (Dr. W. Sower’by) reported t,hat 33 males and 45 females had been admitted during the month, and .that four males had died ; 33 males and 43 females; had been discharged, leaving 28 males and 32 females in the hospital at date. In the outpatients’ department eight males and three females had received treatment involving 72 attendances. A total of 39 operations had been performed. MATRON’S REPORT. The matron (Miss K. M. Ansenne) reported at length on staff and dorneshie matters. It was pointed out that the fumigating room in the new laundry could pot be used until some bars were put up and the doors made airtight; also certain windows: required frosting to lessen the glare of the sun. Authority was sought to purchase a copy of Barclay’s “Anatomy and Physiology,” as it was required -for the nurses’ training and examinations. There were 11 births at the maternity annexe during the month, and five mothers and babies were< in the institution at date. PATETONGA DISTRICT NURSE. The Patetonga district nurse; (Mrs L. McNamara) reported having attended eleven cas®s during the mopth. The fees received totalled £2. DISTRICT HOMES. The superintendent of the District Homes, Tararu, reported that one inmate had died during the month, and that there were 17 males and one female inmates remaining at date. ENGINEER’S REPORT. ,

The engineer (Mr A. M. Sommerville) reported that hq had discontinued the three shift®, on the boilers for steam-heating purposes during the month. Running repairs included the renewing of hot-water pipes under th e women’s and the Ehrer.fried wards. The new laundry had been running daily, and. the machiner.y was in good working order. The coal consumption for the' month totalled 47 tons Bcwt.
