PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee was held on Saturday night, the chairman (Mr W. T. Power) presiding over Messsr W. Purdie, J. C. H. McDonald, J. W. Silcock, W. Smith, R. J. Thorp, G. H. Taylor (headmaster), and W. L. Lawrence (secretary). ABOLITION OF BOARDS. A letter was received from the Auckland Education Board expressing its appreciation of the resolution forwarded by the committee, protesting against the curtailment of the powers or the abolition of education boards. Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P., also wrote on the same subject, and advised that he, would give effect to the resolution in the event of any such legislation being brought down. PAINTING AND REPAIRS. A letter was received from the board’s architect authorising the committee to accept the tenders amounting to £5l 14s 6d for painting class-rooms interiorly, and repairing desks. It was- reported thAt, the work had been satisfactorily completed and the accounts sent forward for payment. DONATION. A further contribution of £1 towards the dental clinic funds was accepted from the Tirohia School Committee with thanks. IMPROVEMENTS TO GROUNDS. The visiting committee (Messrs Silcock and Thorp) reported at length on matters concerning the playing areas. The question of concreting the upper bank in the boys’ playground and providing more adequate storm-water draipage was discussed at length. Finally it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mr McDonald and the secretary to obtain an estimate for the w<Jrk and submit a report to the November meeting. REMOVAL OF GATE. It was decided to erect a gate leading to Primrose Hill and remove the existing stile. BICYCLE SHED. The urgent need for increased accommodation for bicycles was considered. An estimate prepared by Mr McDonald showed that the cost of an additional shed, utilising the eastern wall of the wooden class-room, would be £l5 6s 3d, exclusive of labour. It was resolved to apply to the board for a grant of that amount, and that the committee erect the building free of cost. NAHUM STREET FENCE’. The question of removing the Nahum Street fence so as to give more playing room was discussed. Finally it was resolved t,hat owing to tne ■ ’season being too far advanced to permit of moving the shelter trees the matter be deferred until a later date. DENTAL CLINIC ENVIRONS. Attention was drawn to the untidy state of the ground immediately surrounding tho dental clinic building, and it was resolved that the ground be levelled, put down in lawn grass-, and planted with shrubs. The matter was left in the hands of Messrs McDonald and Smith. FURNITURE FOR CLINIC. On the motion of the chairman the secretary was, authorised to purchase a table, kettle, waste-paper basket, and floor covering for the dental clinic. TRAVELLERS 1 ’ CONCERT. Eulogistic references were made to the success which attended thq recent concert promoted by the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s, Association in aid of the dental clinic funds, and a resolution was passed recording thanks and appreciation to the association, Mr P. Williams, Paeroa, and all who assisted to make the result such an unqualified success. ACCOUNTS. r Accounts amounting to £24 0s 9d on the school fund and ( £B7 6s 7d on the dental clinic fund were; passed for payment. It was resolved to open a separate bank account, to be called the Paeroa Dental Clinic Fund, and that Mr McDonald and the secretary be authorised to sign cheques, ROTA FOR DENTAL NURSE. It was reported that the dental nurse (Miss L. C. Ellis) had visited the Netherton school and examined 42 pupils, all of whom required treatment, which would be commenced this

week. It was resolved that the rota for treatment of pupils attending outside schools be Netherton, Tirohia, Karangahake, Hikutaia, Hikutaia West, and Komata
