The first of the- local summer sports will commence to-morrow, when the official opening ceremony of th© Paerooa Bowling Club’s 1927-28 season is to take place at 2.30 p.m. An invitation is- extended by the club to all bowlers, intending members, and their friends to take part- in the afternoon’s proceedings.

A first offender was convicted and fined 5s for drunkenness- by Mr F. E. Flatt, J.P., at the Paeroa Police Court this morning.

The “ghost” scare has so alarmed the womenfolk of Waihi that even a white horse confined in a section in the neighbourhood of Barry Road has beep sufficient to frighten some into hysterics. A momentary glimpse of the head of the. innocent quadruped over the gate or fence has occasioned women to emit shrieks and run frantically in the direction -of their homes. The locking of windows and doors at an early hour in the evening has become a common practice.

To-morrow afternoon the proceeds of local Rugby football, matches; are to be devoted to charity. The; fixture at the Paeroa Domain is the annual match between teams selected from the- Thames Valley Electric Power Board and th© Public Works Department.

The Paeroa Lawn Tennis Club held a most enjoyable dance at the Gaiety Theatre last night. The dance hall was prettily decorated, and dancers thoroughly enjoyed the Hauraki Orchestra’s music. A dainty supper was served by the lady members-. During the evening the president (Mr S. JH©dge) explained that the- object of holding the dance was not so much as a means of 'raising money as it was to increase the social side of the club’s activities. Judging by the support accorded that evening he considered that object had b©en achieved.

In the course of the hearing of a case at the, Waihi Police Court on Tuesday, when the question of the sobriety of a driver of a motor vehicle was involved, counsel for th© defendant produced a medical certificate purporting to show that the man, though having had a few drinks, was in a fit condition to drive a car. The evidence was met by the presiding S.M., Mr F. W. Platts, by this -remark : “As, a matter of fact a man ought not to take any liquor when driving a motor-car.”

A letter was received from the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association by the Paeroa District High School Committee on Monday expressing the association’s thanks for the hospitality and treatment accorded the concert party at Paeroa last week. The letter concludes : “Particularly wet wish to compliment the- ladies of your committee for their very fine effort in setting out the theatre stage, which was very effective, and easily the best we- have 'had. Great credit is due to them.”

In the Centenary Hall on Saturday night talented Maori orators and singqrs will contribute novel and delightful Maori greetings, ancient dances, poi action songs, etc. Commence. at 8 o’clock. Tickets Is each.'

Three tenders for improving Maratoto Road between Mcßrinn’s Creek and th© Ohinemuri Gold and Silveji Mine were received at yesterdays meeting of the Ohinemuri Countj Council. There was only a difference of £9 between the highest and lowest tenders, and 24© between the lowest tender and the second highest. The tender of Mr H. W. Pennell, station Road, Paeroa, £225 14s, was accepted.
