TURUA TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

DAAINAGE AND STRAYING STOCK. The monthly meeting of the Turua Town Board was held on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Mulesi presiding over Messrs J. McConnell, S. G. Williams, J. H. Johnston, J. T. Davies, and the clerk (Mr J. E. Green). BITUMEN ROADS. Mr J. Mules reported that the bitumen roads had commenced to bleed, and it would soon be necessary to give all the sealed r ads a top-dross-ing of chips or sand. Members opposed the use of sand, as it did not penetrate; sufficiently. The clerk was instructed to make enquiries for supplies. SUPPLY OF BITUMEN. A reply was received from an Auckland firm to the effect that the special quality bitumen desired by the board for patching purposes could not be procured within three months. It was agreed that three months was too long to wait, and that some other bitumen would have to be obtained. SUBSIDY FOR WATERTABLES. In reply to a telegram, Mr T. W. Rhodes wired that inquiries were being made concerning the grant for water-tabling the main roads;, but until the estimates were tabled the position would not be known. STRAYING HORSES. Mr Schmidt urged that, the time had come when drastic action should be taken to deal' with the numbers of horses allowed to stray on theroads of the township, particularly •at nights. He was of opinion that the owners should be prosecuted. Mr Williams pointed out that the matter would have to be dealt with under the County Council’s by-laws.

The clerk stated that the Police Offences Act would suffice 1 . The difficulty would be to get the animals identified.

Members pointed out that a man could not be got to act as ranger. After further discussion the chairman said : Well, what are you going to do ? It is no good coming here and talking and not doing anything. We have done that so often. It was decided to seek the co-opera-tion of the County Council, and in the event of a prosecution th© board would guarantee the cost. It was also decided to draw the attention of Constable Deverejaux to this matter, and to th© shameful manner in which bicycles were continually being ridden at night without lights and on the footpaths in. P re ’ fer&nce to the roads, and request that ihe take the matter up vqry strongly on behalf of the board and prosecute all, offenders in which case the board would cb-operate with him. TOWNSHIP DRAINAGE. Mr Williams asked if it' was possible for the board to take over the control of the drainage of the township area from the Drainage Board as a means of effecting a saving to the ratepayers, who were, seriously affected on account of their comparative high valuation.

Mr Mules supported the suggestion, and it was decided that a committee comprising Messrs Mulest McConnell, and the clerk investigate the matter and report.
