A statement was made at Paeroa on Friday afternoon by Mr E. Casey, divisional superintendent for the North Island Railways; to t,he effect that so far as hei knew there was no chance of taking off the subsidised newspaper train running between Frankton Junction and Thames.

An important address will be delivered at the Gaiety Theatre, Paeroa by Mr W. Fraser, a director of N.Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd., on Wednesday night. He will also screen 3000 ft of film depicting the financial and field operations of N.Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd. Bondholders and the public are cordially invited to attend.

Whilst fishing with a line and hook at the Ngahina wharf, Pa®roa, on Friday afternoon Mr W. Stone., chief engineer of the s.s. Taniwha, hooked a huge eel, weighing over 251 b. Its length was 56 inches, and the girth measured 16 inches. Considerably excitement prevailed during the landing of the fish on to the wharf. The eel, on being brought to Paeroa, was handed to some Maoris, who were highly pleased with the gift.

Porritt referred to the friendly relations that had always existed between them and Mr Wylde, and in expressing regret that they were losing Mi 1 Wylde from their midst congratulated him on his promotion and wished him good luck and good health for the future. Mr Wylde suitably acknowledged the tribute, and thanked those assembled for the presentation. The successor to Mr Wylde at Paeroa is Mr R. J. McLean, who takes up his new duties to-morrow.

Dealing with the disposal of exenemy property, the annual report of the Public Trustee mentions that of the outstanding claims, amounting to £316,918, notified to the New Zealand clearing office for settlement only a sum of £7315 remains unsettled, comprising £B2O notified bj' New Zealand residents against German subject’s, and £6495 submitted by German subjects against New Zealand residents. The net sum credited to the German Liquidation Account, is £245,405 and to the Austrian £1563. The sum of £150,000 has been paid to the Treasury, and further payments will be made as the work progresses.
