DISTRICT NEWS.

NGATEA. SCHOOL LIBRARY. The committee of the Combined Sports Association of Ngateja has agreed to give the proceeds of its next Saturday night dance and euchre tournament to the Ngatea District High School for the purpose of assisting the school library. PIAKO RIVER DREDGING. For the first time since the; Lands Department commenced operations on the Hauraki Plains dredging is being done seaward of the Ngatea bridge. The No. 6 Priestman machine passed down the, river yesterday and is now working upward from the six-mile peg, which is about two miles north ■of Ngatea. WAITAKARURU. WATER SUPPLY SCHEME.

The Hume Pipe Company has completed its contract for the laying of water-mains in connection with the Hauraki Plains West water supply scheme with the, exception of the connections, over the various streams and canals, and anticipates being able to turn the water on for testing purposes in toe course of a day o'- two. The contractor for the erection of the bridges has all his materials on' the sites, and expects to commence driving the piles to-day. It appears that the bridge over the Maukord canal, will be about 7ft higher than the road bridge a little down-stream. The piles to be used are over 40ft long, and the size of thei timber indicates that the bridge will be a very substantial affair. Critics of the water scheme, of whom there are many, inquire the necessity for the! height of the bridge, considering that the road bridge already bars waterborne traffic in the canal; and many go so far as to ask the need for a bridge, at all, seeing that the pipes could be strapped to the road until such time —not far distant --Y

as new traffic bridges are built. The critics point out. that the six rightangles and the‘rise at each bridge must have an effect on the pressure of the water in the mains.

Rapid progress is being made with the laying of the iron piper, trom-Dal-gety’s corner southward now that adequate supplies have come to hand. Large gangs of mein are employed, and as they receive big wages quick work is required of them. ROAD-WORK. The County Council’s maintenance gange are now employed in the Waitakaruru district, and the roads are, rapidly being brought up to the excellent standard of the rest of the main roads. One of the contractors at Coxhead’s filling, on the Waitaka-ruru-Morrins ville road, has commenced WQrk.
