TREATMENT OF CANCER.
DANGER OF LEAD;
A DOCTOR’S WARNING.
The English doctor who practically cured a woman of cancer by the lead treatnrnjnt, ■ only to have ' his patient die from an overdose of the remedy, is by no means a pioneer in the treatment, of cancer by lead. For some years, experiments had been in progress-, but, as in the case reported by cable, it has been I found extremely difficult ,to avoid giving ,al fatal dose. Many years ago Dr. Blair Be-. 11, of Liverpoool, discovered by observation and experiment that lead had a powerful effect in the destruction of cancer ceills. He injected lead into the bodies of cancer patients, and cured a number of hopeless casies. x The lead treatment, according to a recent article) in the Australian Medical Journal, by Dr. D. Kelly, of Sydney, has been tried by many others, but few have obtained results similar to Dr. Bell. Too often in their cases th© lethal dose for cancer was found to be the lethal dose for thei patient. “This, however,” remarks D. Kelly, “is nothing against the administration of lead, for, not only did they not give the same preparation, but they did not give the dosage advised by Bell.”
Not ejvery patient with inoperable cancer can have lead treatment, and, since lead is a powerful toxip drug, Dr. Kelly urged that it should be used only in certaim cases by doctors specially trained in its use, and then in hospitals where patientsi could be carefully watched.
