The principal attraction at the local domain on Saturday afternoon was the final game in the knock-out competition for the Drysdale Cup between the Veterans and East seniors, the former winning by the narrow margin of one point. This competition has attracted considerable inteiest, and there was a large attendance of spectators present on Saturday. The afternoon was fine and the field in fair order. Play was fast, and the way the Veterans, who were the better team on the day, stood up to their younger opponents frequently won applause. East made the nace throughout, but over-eagerness on several occasions lost them chances of scoring. The East team was the first to score by registering a penalty goal early in the first quarter, but towardsi the close of the second quarter the Veterans equalised the scores with a penalty goal. At the call of time no further points had been registered, and, in accordance with the rules governing the competition, the game was continued for twenty minutes, the teams playing ten minutes each way. Shortly after resuming the Veterans compelled East to force, which counted one point, and by that narrow margin the Veterans won the competition. East also appeared to gain a force in the closing stages of the game, but there was so much arguing and talking that the referee ordered a free kick from the twenty-five line. The Veterans took the field headed by a pony bearing an advertising sign for the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ concert at Paeroa and ridden by a stalwart Veteran forward. Following were the teams - Veterans.—E. L. Sha.W, L. McNeil, A. Royal, J. Maloney, J. McCarroll, G. Masters, ’g. Royal, T. Johnson, L. E. Shaw, B. Neil, V. Young, G. Neil, F. T. V. Johnson, F. East won the toss and elected to play against the wind. Young’s opening kick was returned to the line at halfway by Pullar. After a penalty kick by each side play went to, East s territory, where the Veterans failed with another penalty kick, but G. Royal’s attempt was, short and H. Moore cleared. " Aft.er considerable Loose play in midfield Ryan sent H. Moore away on a good run before transferring to E. Moore. A breach was committed by the Veterans, and E. Moore kicked a good goal. East 3, Veterans 0. East again attacked until L. Shaw cleared with a long kick. In the second quarter first McCarroll, and then Johnson put East on the defensive, and after tight play a force resulted. Play went to the other end of the field, where a penalty kick by E. Moore failed to materialise. Thorp was injured and was replaced by M. H. Chamberlain. Pressure by East was relieved with a penalty kick, and another at.tack was, negatived by Maloney, who reversed the positions with a nice run down the field, but he was unsupported and Pullar cleared. From the throw-in B. Neil sent Maloney away, but the latter's pass to Masters Was intercepted by R. Smith. However, Pullar committed a breach and McCarroll kicked a good goal. East 3, Veterans 3.

On resuming after half-time T. Johnson kicked to Treanor, who marked and cleared to halfway. The Veterans again attacked, and in tight play in front of the posts R- Smith cleared with a speculator. Fitch and Radford headed a loose rush to the Veterans,’ twenty-five, but McCarroll returned the ball to neutral territory. Another loose rush by the Veterans was stopped by H. Moore and' play returned to midfield. A long period of open play then ensued in neutral territory, with many line-outs. A pretty passing bout between Young, McCarroll, and McNeil was spoiled by offside play, and the ball sent out in East’s twenty-five.

In the final round East attacked, and N. Neil made a good run but faileq to pass, and McNeil cleared to the twenty-five flag. After tight play a loose rush by the Veterans terminated in McCarroll having an unsuccessful shot at goal. A period of give and take play followed, with the; Veterans mainly on the attack. Suddenly Fitch broke away and headed a loose rush to the Veterans line, and after a scramble a five-yards scrum was ordered. McNeil received from the sacrum, and play was rushed to the other end of the field, where Treanor was penalised for hanging on to the ball. McCarroll took the kick, the ball hitting the post and bouncing back into the field. The pressure was kept up until N. Neil and Fitch broke away, reaching the Veterans territory.

Time was declared, but as the scores were equal play was resumed for two ten-minute spells.

East attacked, and after some exciting play near the Veterans line a rush, in which Chamberlain and Maloney were prominent, took the ball to the other end of the field and Barakat forced.

After changing over, play was in neutral territory until a mark by Maloney was blocked and East attacked. Following a five-yards scrum the ball went out in the corner, and from the throw-in th© ball went over the line, but the referee ordered East a free kick from the twenty-five line.
