Fearful of an adverse alteration to the Customs tariff, merchants throughout the Dominion during recent months l lifted large quantities of spirits, tobacco, and cigarettes from bond. The fact that the tariff proposals do not affect those items itt regarded ip Wellington as the commercial joke of the season, with the laugh on the merchants. The following figures (states the “Dominion”) show as near as possible what are understood to be the excess quantities of spirits, tobacco, and cigarettes, together with the excess amount of duty, cleared as a result of the tariff “scare’ : Spirits, 220,00 gallons, £400,000; cigarettes, 1200 (thousand), £15,000 ; tobacco, 110,0001 b, £23,009.

The Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce at a recent meeting expressed surprise and regret on learning the relatively small number of guests that will be accommodated for the large amount of £30,0(10, which is now being spent in improving and extending the Waitomo Caves hostel (states an exchange). The building accommodates 36, and the addition will only increase the number by 37, making a total of 73. In view of thic fact that there has been an annual increase of 2500 visitors to this resort in the past three years, it was contended that accommodation for at least 100 visitors should have been made. A builder eixpressed the opinion that, at an extra cost of £BOOO another storey could have been built providing accommodation for double the present number. Others stressed the point that for the expenditure of a few thousands accommodation could be provided for another 50 people. It was resolved to write the Minister pointing this out and urging that this extra accommodation be provided. Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. First aid for coughs, colds, influenz.
