WAIHI DEFEATS PAEROA.

JOHNSTON CUP COMPETITION.

On Saturday afternoon the Paeroa Ladies’ Hockey team journeyed to Waihi to meet the Waihi representative team, in the Johnston Cup competition. The game, which was fast and even throughout, resulted in a win for the home side by one goal to nil. In the first half Miss Carter netted the only score of the match. The Paeroa team had hard luck in not winning, as they took the ball into the circle on several occasions, but were penalised for breaches. Mr T. Hicks was referee. At the conclusion of the game the visitors were hospitably entertained by the Waihi ladies. MT. EDEN VISITS PLAINS. GOOD FIGHT BY HOME LADIES. Hauraki Plains lady hockey players put up a good fight against the champion Auckland club teams at Ngatea on Saturday, being beaten in one match by two goals to nil and almost winning the second-grade match, which resulted in a draw, no score being registered. The field at Ngatea was very rough and wiet as a result of the season’s: football in wet weather and the very heavy rain on Saturday morning. These conditions favoured the home sides, which were more or less used to rough pl.aying fields and mud.

From the very beginning Plains attacked, but individual play and lack of support were very noticeable. Lucky shots by the visitors neutralised much hard play. Miss Beaver as centre forward played a good game, and some good saves were effected by the goal-keeper, Miss Harris. Ten minutes after starting Missea E. Candy, F. Berney, and M. Beaver were responsible for the first score. Several attacks by Plains, in which Misses Beaver, Berney, Jessen, and Courtney were conspicuous, failed on account of lack of support by the forwards. 'ln the second half play was more even and ranged up and down the field. Miss Harris saved on many occasions for Plains, and for long periods play was in the visitors* circle. After a concentrated attack Miss Walker, Mt. Eden’s right wing, scored, making the total one all. The same player scored again shortly afterwards; though most of the attacking was done by the home side’s backs, who .suffered on account of lack of support. Mr M. Canning was referee. THE SECOND GAME. The game by the second teams was more interesting. From the commencement Plains played well, and play was in midfield. Mt. Eden attacked in open formation, keeping the game fast, but failed to score. The home team played right into the mouth of the goal, but was not successful, and from a corner hit the visitors relieved. Plains returned to the attack. Miss K. McKerchar on the left wing was the outstanding player so and the visitors’ right half was very good. A series of attacks by the visitors followed, the left wing player being prominent. Misses B. Hunter and M. Harwood were the outstanding Plains players, but, as in the other game, the home eleven did not work together and many advantages were lost. In the last few minutes of the spell play was in midfield, with Mt. Eden having the better of the proceedings. Miss Candy had a shot at goal, but the goalie saved.

On resuming Plains rushed, and after play had remained about the twenty-five line a well centred shot was saved by the goalkeeper. The visitors were kept on the defensive, the goalie saving from good shots by B. Hunter, K. McKerchar, and M. Harwood. Attacks to the home team’s goal were cleared by Mrs Hands andMrs Kidd. Miss Thompson was sound on attack, as also .was Miss K. McKerchar, but, generally, the backs had to work without the support of the forwards, In the last few minutes of the game play was in the visitors’ territory, and from a corner hit the ball was sent straight through the goalHad it stopped rolling before being hit Plains would have won the match. Mr T. Field was referee.
