Information was received by Constable McClinchy yesterday afternoon to th© effect that a middle-aged man, named Thomas- Perry, was found dead under a haystack at Kerepeehi. It is surmised that deceased, who had been working for Mr A. J. Heasman, Kerepeehi, for the past fortnight, was either working on the stack or sheltering under it, when the wind blew it over and smothered him. ■ An inquest is being held on Mr Heasman’s farm this afternoon.

At the local Police Court this morning, before Mr H. J. Hare, J.P., an Englishman, aged 55 years; and a first offender, was charged with drunkenness in Normanby Road on Saturday evening. Evidence was given by Constable J. Dawson as to arresting the offender. Defendant, who did not appear, was convicted and ordered to forfeit the amount of his bail. 10s.

The installation of the electrical inter-locking system for the Paeroa railway yards is to be commenced in about a fortnight’s time*. Messrs. J. P. Grapes, R. Apel and C. Hollis, of the department staff, were in Paeroa last week, when preliminary measurements and other data were obtained. It is expected that the installation will take about three months to complete.

Some, excitement was occasioned in the- main street on Friday afternoon. A Mr Bishop, of Komata North, had driven into Paeroa and had tied his horse, attached to a gig, to a hitching post at the corner of William Street and Belmont Road while he did some shopping. Apparently something frightened the horse, and it pulled back and, in its efforts to get fre.e, fell over and lay across the left-hand shaft of the gig. Messrs N. Beattie and M. H. Chamberlain were quickly on the scene and assisted and'quietened the animal before any serious damage was done.

The Hauraki Plains ladies’ hockey team which played Thames at Thames on Saturday for the Johnstone Cup was, beaten by six goals to one.

A reminder is given that the Paeroa Ladies’ Hockey Club is. holding its annual dance and 500 tournament at „the Gaiety Theatre to-morrow. The 'supper, prizes, music, and floor will leave nothing to be. desired.*

It is understood that the Hauraki Plains Co-operative Dairy Co., of Turua, has sold its output of cheese until the end of Docember at a price which will enable a pay-out of. Is 8d to be made.

An amusing hockey match was played at Ngatea on Saturday, when the “Rosebud’ team played the Ngatea ladies’ team and won by three to nil. The Rosebuds were a team of Ngatea boys all dressed in skirts, and though their instructions left it optional whether they could use rouge and powder, most of them took this as a Command, ami the colours were, not washed off after half an hour’s play in pouring rain.
