LORRY CAPSIZES.
ACCIDENT ON THAMES ROAD. DRIVER ESCAPES INJURY. Shortly after nine o’clock yesterday morning a, large motor-lorry owned by the Ohinemuri County Council and driven by Mr F. Robinson, who resides at Karangahake, capsized on Thames Road.
The scene of the mishap is almost opposite the Hikutaia quarry, and the vehicle- left the centre of th© road and travelled to the edge at the foot of a slight decline where it left the metal and turned completely over in a soft marshy spot.
It appeal's that the driver left the Komata quarry, where he took on a load of metal which he was proceeding to deliver in the Hikutaia portion of the Kai-manawa riding.
No reason can be given for the mishap other than the possibility that something went wrong with the: steering gear, as the lorry was travelling at a slow speed at the time. Only a little while before the accident happened the driver gave a lift to a man who was walking to Omahu, but fortunately both driver and passenger had a miraculous escape. They went over with the lorry, but managed to escape through the cab of the vehicle scathless, with the exception of mudstained and wet clothes.
It is understood that the lorry, which has: been on the road only three months, is covered by a comprehensive insurance policy. Sheerlegs and tackle were requisitioned to get the vehicle upright and on to th&road again. So far as can be ascertained by a cursory examination the damage comprises a broken windscreen and cab, twisted mudguards, and slight damage to the radiator.
