TENNIS ASSOCIATION.
MOVE IN THAMES VALLEY.
PAEROA CLUB APPROVES. For some seasons past an effort nas been‘made to form a tennis association comprising clubs- in the Thames Valley and Hauraki Plains. Several ifieetings have been held at various times, and finally the Te Aroha club took the matter in hand. A secretary was appointed, and delegates who attended the conference at Te Aroha wefe appointed a committee. At the annual meeting of the Paeroa Tennis Club held last night a letter was received from the secretary of the Thames Valley Lawn Tennis Association, Te Aroha, advising that the application for affiliation with the N.Z. Tennis Association had been granted. The first annual general meeting of Thames Valley delegates would be held at Paeroa on September 21. The business would be the adoption of constitution, rules, election of officers, and arrangement of programme for inter-club matches. A copy of the tentative rules was. also forwarded.
The chairman (Mr R. L. Miller) said that he thought the association would be of .advantage, and would no doubt stimulate interest in tennis in the district and provide increased competition. •
Mr S. J. Hedge agreed, but thought the tentative rules required some modification.- In order to expedite the business of the meeting he moved that the delegates be recommended to nominate three vice-presidents only, instead of six as suggested. Mr D. G. McMillan thought that the idea underlying the election of six vice-presidents was so that each club would have a vice-president on the association.
The resolution was seconded by Mr H. Thorp.
An amendment was moved by Mr McMillan to the effect that the club’s delegates support the nomination of one vice-president from each club which affiliates with the‘association; otherwise that one vice-president only be elected.
Seconded by Mr A. P. Grant. The amendment was carried on a showing of hands. A lengthy discussion followed in connection with the defaulters? rule, and after a resolution and an amendment had been moved and withdrawn the following resolution was carried : “That it be a recommendation to the delegates that the names of financial members as at December 31 only be submitted to the- association.” The suggestion that the boundaries of the association should extend to the boundary of the Waikato Association at Morrinsville, take in the Hauraki Plains and the Thames Valley, including Thames and Waihi boroughs, was considered. • It was suggested by Mr Steedman that the northern boundary might be extended so as to include Coromandel. He said the Coromandel club was a very old-established one, and rather isolated, and for that reason the members might like to join the association.
It was decided to ascertain the views of the Coromandel club, and if it was desirous of joining, that the delegates be recommended to support the extension of the northern boundary.
Mssrs S. J. Hedge, H. R. Thorp, A, P. Grant, and D. G. McMillan were appointed delegates to the association.
