Very few people have had a dareer as eventful as that of, the late Rev. W. Ready, of Auckland, who passed away suddenly in Palmerston North last Wednesday morning. As a lad poverty drove him on to the streets of London, there to eke out an existence on his,. wits. He has told of thetime when he executed “cartwheels with such dexterity that they earned for him a penny or two from passersby, while he would also walk on his hands for the same small monetary reward. The story is told of his offer to perform ■“cartwheels” down the aisle of the Pitt Street Methodist Church in Auckland if someone would contribute £5OO towards a philanthropic effort which he had charge of. “I would have done, it, too, or even walked on my hands,” he stated afterwards.
