SOLDIERS’ LAND.
VALUATION AT KOPUKU.
BIG REDUCTION BY GOVERNMENT. Soldier settlers of the Kopukli Settlement, Waikato, bought their land from the Government at £24 per acre; the valuation has since been reduced to £4‘ per acre-. The Government paid the original vendor £l6. These facts were brought out at last .week’s sitting of the Assessment Court by the owner of a property in the same district who claimed a reduction on his valuation. The Government valuer, Mr W. A. Gordon, explained that the reduction was a special concession to the soldier settlers, not affecting valuation for ordinary purposes. The land had gone back to blackberry, and was mostly under water, with the exception of some poor' hill land. At the time it was' sold to the Government a good fire had been put through, and the blackberry appeared to be in check.
In another case the question of reduction of the value of soldiers’ farms was raised. Mr Gordon explained that in these cases the valuation was- reduced below the real capital value, but the amount of current account owing had to be reckoned.— Waikato Times.
