WARDEN’S COURT.

SITTING AT PAEROA.

APPLICATIONS DEALT WITH. (Before Mr F. W. Platts, Warden.) A sitting of the Warden’s Court was held at Paeroa on’Monday, the following applications being dealt with

The surrender of residence site No. 4421 at Karangahake was accepted from Ralph Pennell. An application for a prospecting license over 100, acres at Waitekauri was granted to Joseph Bramble as also was a residence site license for sections 27A and 278, block 9, Karangahake, to A. W. Maclarn. FORFEITURE ACCEPTED. The claim of the N.Z. Crown Mines', Ltd., was forfeited for non-compliance with labour conditions. On behalf of the company Mr E. A. Porritt said that he did not propose to offer any objection. However, he desired to explain that the operations of the Mining Act were acting rather hardly on the company, which had been unable to comply with the regulations in their entirety. In view of the large amount of money that had been expended, and the employment that had been provided for a great number in the palmy days of the mine, he claimed that some concession should be given the company. While admitting that there were no grounds for a solid defence, he wished to record his protest. The warden agreed, but said that the Act as it stood must take its, course, and the forfeiture would be granted.

Mr J. Beeche (Waihi), who appeared for the complainant (Meagher) thereupon applied to have the decree of forfeiture entered. He pointed out that the Mines Act stated that (as complainant had been proved to be the first applicant) it was necessary to peg out the ground and apply for it within seven days. The Warden agreed that that was the proper course to follow, but that the case was not one in which costs should be allowed, as complainant’had already gained What he sought.
