Advice was received from Mr A. M. Samuel M.P., yesterday that the Minister of Education has approved of a grant for the acquisition of a new school site at Komata North and the removal thereto of the unused school building a.t Mackaytown.

The question regarding the jurisdiction of the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee in granting the license for the Morrinsville Hotel was before the Supreme Court at Auckland on Monday, and after a lengthy hearing Mr Justice Stringer reserved his decision.

Prior to the commencement of business at yesterday’s meeting of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board at Te Aroha the chairman (Mr F. M. Strange) paid tribute to the sterling qualities) of the late Mr A. A. Wagstaff. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives was carried in silence, the members standing.

It now takes £1 12s 2d on the average to purchase what could be purchased for £1 in July, 1924, according to information contained in the monthly Abstract of Statistics for August.

In order to assist women passengers to prevent their hats from being spoiled by dust the Railway Department has decided to supply large paper bags in which hats may be placed during a journey. The bags will be supplied free of charge at the Auckland, Rotorua, Tfe Aroha, Frankton Junction, and Thames stations, and will also be obtainable from the guards of trains during a journey. The innovation will be commenced shortly.

A special report submitted by the engineer (Mr N. G. McLeod) on the system of charges on the flat rate versus meter basis was considered at yesterday’s meeting of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board. The report and discussion, taken in committee, occupied a long time. On resuming in open meeting Mr F. E. Flatt moved that the report be held over until the board’s annual meeting in May next. This was agreed to.

A good deal of local interest was manifested in the boxing tournament at Te Aroha. on Monday night, when a number of young men made the journey to witness the bouts. The chief event, between P. Black, Wellington, and-M. Carrol, Wanganui, resulted in a victory for the latter on points in the tenth round.

On Saturday next the train usually leaving Paeroa for Te Aroha at 11.25 a.m. will be delayed on account of a football match at Te Aroha. See the Railway Department’s advertisement in this issue.
