As a result of the function the funds of the society benefited by over £B. tttrua. PUBLIC HALL COMPANY. A satisfactory position was disclosed at the annual general meeting of the Turua Public Hall Company last Thursday evening, when Mr A. H. Rogers, chairman of directors, presided over an attendance of 44 shareholders. The company was registered on April 1 1926, but the hall was not opened for business until September 29, thus the statement of finances on the trading account only dealt with the nine-months. period during which the hall was revenue-producing. The receipts fpr that period from pictures, hall hire, rentals, etc., totalled £991 19s 7d, and the expenditure £567 8s lOd, leaving a balance of £423 10s 9d to the profit and loss account. After paying a large sum on bank interest, for so far only £348 17s 6d of share capital has been called up, and writing off depreciation, proportion of preliminary expenses, etc., there was a balance of £lo2' 4s Bd. As the memorandum and articles of the company provide that no profits shall be paid out to shareholders by way of dividend for the first four years this amount will be carried, to reserve, and used in reduction of overdraft. The balance-sheet showed the valuation of the land to be £9O, building and property £2251 15s 5d and seating, furnishing, piano, picture machine, and equipment £762 6s lid. The annual report mentioned, inter alia, that the directors, after very mature consideration and careful inquiry, decided that it was in the best interests of the company that the company should run its own pictures, and although this entailed a cetrain amount of extra capital outlay, the results have- more than justified the directors’ decision. The directors, have also, done their best to run the hall op up-to-date lines in all respects, and they have all, in turn, given much of their time .and attention in assisting with the running of the pictures, and thusi had the management under their personal supervision. They much appreciate the support of. the shareholders and public in making the hall the success it has so far been, and trust that the same measure of support will continue to be given in the future as in the past. The directors would like to impress upon shareholders, that it is only with their united support and loyalty that the venture can continue to be made a financial and social success for the district.
The report and balance-sheet were adopted after a little explanation by directors, several speakers congratulating the company on the success of its operations. The directors were accorded a vote of thanks for their services to the company.
In accordance with the articles of association three directors retired by rotation, those being Messrs D. G. McMillan, A. H. Rogers, and G. Gray. Mr McMillan did not seek, re-election, but the other two were together with Mr W. Chapman, the defeated candidates being Messrs C. Dale and J. Schmidt.
The only busines s introduced by shareholders was a suggestion that the charges for hall hire for local functions be reduced, and a recommendation to the directors to that effect was carried.
