COULD STOP ANY WAR.

BRITAIN AND UNITED STATES.

UNION OF TWO PEOPLES.

“Acting in concert, Britain .and the United States could stop any struggle in a few weeks,” declared Sir Frederick Qhapmap at the annual meeting of the English Speaking Union at Wellington on Tuesday night. “I take a very deep interest in what yop have so much at heart,” said Sir

Thomas Mackenzie, who spoke first, “It is a most important thing,, this bringing together of the two great English-speaking nations, and ensuring a proper understanding. There is ,a great necessity for creating public opinion, an urgent necessity, and to me it is a matter of regret when I hear disparaging remarks about the United States. I have; been in America on. a number of occasions, and not once did I hear the expression ‘we won the war. That is propaganda promulgated by the enemies of both countries.

“I am tflich 1 an enthusiast that I have been in trouble for making the suggestion that if the Prince of Wales wanted a bride he might do worse than take ope from across the Atlantic. Nothing but good could result from shch a union, which would be a union of the hearts of two great peoples, who must stand together, for if they do not we do not know what may happen ‘to the world.” FOSTERING FRIENDSHIP. It was important that they should foster friendship with the great nation on the other side of the Atlantic, said Sir Frederick Chapman, but they should also foster friendship with people from all over their own Empire. The establishment, of any bodies Which would promote contacts was commendable. The question of contacts with the United States was a bigger problem, for an almost infinitesimal point of contact was obtained. Still, a beginning could be made. It was not a question of international relations between the United States and England. That had been, answered by t,he fact that on the 3000-mile frontier between Canada and the United States neither side thought it worth while to keep a .single soldier. There ,was an idea that the United States and Britain could keep the peace for the rest of the world, and he maintained that it could be done. America, since George Washington, had always been afraid of alliances, but his idea was that in future when the-British and the Americans were at one in connection with anything, they should announce this as a common aim. If they were agreed upon any line of policy in the direction of keeping the peace of the world and stopping an insane war Britain and the United States could end any struggle within a few weeks. This was, perhaps, a remote hope, But long before this they could perform many acts of kindness to theii neighbours. Personal contact between the peoples was needed, and he hoped that a way would be found to induce a new stream of people to come here every year.
