THE RAINFALL.

FIGURES FOR MONTH OF AUGUST.

From records supplied by the local office of the Public Works Department, it is shown that rain fell on 23 days at Paeroa during'the month of August. The heaviest fall was on August 19, when 0.63 in. was recorded. The total rainfall for the month was 4.36 in„ compared with 4.48 in. for the corresponding month in 1926. The rainfall for the first eight months of this year totalled 34.90111., which is 5.36 in. less than for the same period last year. It is, a noticeable fact that although rain fell on 23 days this month, not on any day was a heavy down-pour recorded. The barometer averaged 29.75 degrees, the highest reading being on August 29, when 30.38 degrees was registered. The thermometer averaged 45 degrees, the highest being on August 12, 30, and 31, when it reached 56 degrees. HAURAKI PLAINS GAUGING. The official rain gauge at the office of the Lands Drainage Department, Kerepeehi, shows that during the month of August 4.76 inches of rain fell on 25 days. Actually this is incorrect, for on the first four days of the month there were dense fogs, ■which resulted in .08 inch of water being deposited in the gauge. Air the rain was very light, the heaviest fall during the month being only .62 inch for the 24 hours ended at 8 a.m. on the 31st. Except, for August, 1926, the month’s total has not l been equalled since 1913 and 1916, but since gauging was commenced in 1912 there hasi not been a month with a greater numbep of days on which some rain fell. The'total for the eight months of the present year is 33.50 inches, with 131 wet days, as compared with 3'5.47 inches and 109 days for the same period of 1926, and 26.34 inches, and 104 days for 1925. Even in the very -wet years of 1924, when 4'0.73 inches fell in the first eight months, there -were only 109 wet days. In tho 19-days period from the 6th to the 25th there was only one fine •day. The other fine days were the Sth and from the 26th to the 29th.
