COUNCILLOR WELCOMED.

MR J. B. MORRIS CONGRATULATED

MEMBER FOR KARANGAHAKE. > Prior to the commencement of business at yesterday’s; meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, a hearty welcome was extended Mr J- B. Morris by the chairman (Mr H. M. Corbett). In congratulating Mr Morris on being returned as riding member

f for Karangahake the chairman said "w that he was generally looked upon as the “father” of Karangahake, upon whom a revival in mining in the dis> trict would probably depend. Cr. Morris would have a difficult task to fill the position so jVorthily and for such a long term of years; as their esteemed colleague, the late Cr. A. D. McGuire. In wishing Cr. Morris good luck and a happy term of office, the chairman expressed the hope that in matters of importance he would b& prepared to co-operate with the council and agree, or at anyrate agree to differ. The experience gained on the council would no doubt prove interesting and instructive, and Cr. Morris could rely on the help and goodwill of the councillors. In returning thanks for t'he warm welcome and kind remarks Cr. Morris said that unfortunately, financially, he represented a poor riding. Howewer, he hoped for, and believed, that better times were coming. He fully realised that he had a hard row to hoe to follow in the footsteps of the late

Cr. McGuire, but he, would at all times do his best. He was proud of being returned for Karangahake, he was very proud of Ohinemuri. In the

past a sum approaching £16,000,000 had been taken from the Karangahake riding, and he still believed that ■his riding would yet be in a position to help the finances of the Ohinemuri County in the future.
