HOCKEY.
THAMES LADIES BEAT PAEROA. CLOSELY CONTESTED GAME. One of the best games of hockey seen at Pae-rpa for this season was played at the domain on Saturday between a Thames representative team and a Paeroa eleven-.
The game was fast and fairly open, and was keenly contested. Although defeated by three goals to two, the home team ip the second half easily held its own, and had hard luck iif pot evening up the score on several < ccasions.
I n the first half the scores stood at one all, Miss P. Boyle scoring for Thames and Miss A. Morland for Paeroa. Shortly after resujning ,at halftime the home forwards took play into their opponents’ circle, where, in a scramble, Miss L. Ellis sent in a stinging shot for paeroa, making the scores Paeroa 2, Thames 1. Even and fast play followed to th® end of the gamei during which Miss< J. Willetts netted a good goal, and was followed shortly afterwards by Miss P. Boyle registering her second score. The Rev. Weadon and Mr L. Mahon were referees.
The visitors, were the guests of the home team at afternoon tea before they left on their return journey to Thames.
HAURAKI PLAINS ASSOCIATION. "MEETING AT NGATEA. The Hauraki Plains Ladies’ Hockey Association met at Ngatea on Thursday evening last, Mr J. H. Nicholson presiding over Messrs: J. E. Reid, H. L. Berney, J. Miller, J. Terrill, H. Kerby, and R. C. Abel (secretary). REPORT OF TOUR. * The- manager of the team sent to take part in the Country Week tournament at Auckland reported t|hat the proposal for .the insurance of players had lapsed for want of support by other associations. The match 8 against Franklin East resulted in a draw — 2 all. A win was secured against Rotorua by 2 to 1, but in the games against Tauranga, Auckland Collegians, Auckland Juniors’, and Waikato the Plains team had been beaten. A home and home match with the Mt. Eden club had been arranged, but on account of the weather the game at Mt. Eden had to be abandoned. TheMt. Eden team had offered to play at Ngatea about the end of August. The manager recommended that in
future the association should endeavour to pay for the board of the team while in Auckland at tournaments. Another suggestion was that the team should be picked in time for it to play several games before going on tour, to enable combination to be obtained. Concluding his report the manager congratulated the team on its good behaviour ahd obedience throughout the tour.
Mr Nicholson was accorded: a vote of thanks for: his >vork and report. ' The matter of arranging a match with the Mt. Eden club at Ngatea was left to the secretary to arrange while in Auckland.
CUP FOR COMPETITION.
The Thames- Hockey Association advised that it had been presented with a cup by 'Johnston Bros., of Thames, for annual competition by the Thames, Plains, Whihi, and Paeroa associations:. For the present season it had been suggested that, Thames play Plains and Waihi play Paeroa, and the winners play off. The teams which were beaten in the first round and did not play the winner of the cup would have the right .to challenge the holder. The association decided to participate in the competition, and Messrs C. W. Harris, E. Campbell, and S. Cook were reappointed the representative team selectors.
TRANSFER. Miss L. C. Ellis was granted a clearance to the Paeroa. Association.
PRESENTATION OF SHIELD
It was decided that the association congratulate the Waitakaruru club on winning the inter-club competition, thereby becoming the first holders of the Nicholson Shield.
This trophy will be presented at a dance qnd euchre tournament to b' e held at Ngatea early next month. The proceeds of the function will go towards the fund for sending the representative team to Thames to take part in the competition for the Johnston Cup. Mr H. L. Berney was appointed to act as secretary during the absence oiv holiday of Mr R. C. Abel.
