PLAINS WATER SUPPLY.

PROGRESS OF SCHEME. PIPE-LINES BEING LAID OUT. Steady progress is being made with the various contracts in connection with the Hauraki Plains West watert supply scheme. The construction of the dam- was completed some time ago, but a little work remains to be done in the creek-bed below the spillway to prevent scour. The Hume Pipe Co. are pushing pipes from the dam to Dalgety’s; corner. Three gangs of men are employed and the pipe is completed to within a short distance of the tunnel, with the exception of the - crossings over the stream and canal at Waitakaruru. The fittings for the pump which is, to be installed on a section already acquired from Mr McAulay, at Dalget’s corner, are on order. Some of the iron pipes, for the Pipiroa and Ngatea lines have arrived and are being laid out. Further supplies of iron pipes are on the water. Thia part of the reticulation will progress more quickly than where the concrete'pipes, were used.

Acting as trustee for settlers who have already advanced the casih, the County Council has ordeyed a. certain amount of galvanised iron service piping from England, and this action has had the effect of creating competition, with the result tlhat settlers are- now able to get service pipes at very satisfactory prices.

!=>ome days ago the sludge-gate at the dam was opened ,to let the wat.er out. Passers-by, seeing the dam empty—the water apparently passing underneath it—and a., dark mark which appeared from the road to be a crack in the concrete, concluded that the structure. had failed. The rumour quickly reached .the council’s water-supply engineer, and it is stated that the council’s by-laws relative to the speed of motors were broken all the way between Orongo' and the dam.
