Profound regret was expressed in Paeroa yesterday morning when the news was received that the Hon. RF. Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs, had died at Wellington after a brief illness. Flags were flown at half-mast from the principal flagstaffs as a mark of respect.
Schools under the jurisdiction of tht Auckland Education Board close to-day for a fortnight’si term holidays. Schools will re-open on September 12.
Prior to the commencement of business at the annual meeting of the Paeroa Bowling Club the chairman (Mr E. Edwards) referred to the losjs the club had sustained by the deaths of Messrs E. Shaw (a foundation -member), C. Olson (a life member), and A. E. gay. A resolution of condolence was, carried in silence, the members standing.
“The most deerebit-looking lot of players I have ever seen,” was the way a speaker referred to a Paeroa Bowling Club team which had taken part in a tournament at Te Aroha. It is only fair to state that the speaker was referring to thei dress of the players when discussing the matter at the annual meeting of the club ’em Wednesday night.
In the course- of his address: to the ■members of the Paeroa Orphans’ Club last night Bro. C. E. Andrews said he believed that he 'held the honour of being the first officer to carry out an official burial ceremony in connection with the Gallipoli Peninsula operations.
On account of the school holidays the final football match for the Terrill Cup between the Ngatea and Kerepeehi school teams will not be played to-morrow as a curtain-raiser to the Poland Cup match, as intended, but will take place some time after school recommences.
The difficulties being experienced by the service cars in negotiating the journey between Waihi and Tauranga are almost beyond description, and have h;>d to be contended with almost daily during thei last two or three months- (states the Waihi “Telegraph”). From Omokoroa, about five miles from Tauranga, the trials of the drivers begin in earnest, and continue thence on to Aongate-te, some six or seven miles from Ka.tikati. On this stretch of road the cars have been getting through with the- aid of horses, jacks, and picks and shovels, and the vehicles ‘have at times had narrow escapes from overturning. One day recently a. lady passenger, on route to Thames, had a small valise clasped -tightly in one hand, while with the other s;he endeavoured to hold herself in the seat. This, however she failed to accomplish, and with the jolt her bag was shot out of the car. In its flight it opened, iind the contents, documents and literature, were strewn far and wide in the mud. The process of regaining the papers involved wading nearly knee deep in a veritable -morass.
Strong exception to the use by some settlers of electrically driven drarnwater pumps is voiced by some Pipiroa district ’settlers, who complain that the outlet drain is filled with water propelled off tlie farm of the pump owner to the detriment of all the others using that outlet.
Following the blow-out of a front tyre a Ford car, -owned and driven by Mr A. Hutchinson, of Wa.ihi, overturned on the Waihi-Paeroa road in the neighbourhood of Owharoa the other afternoon. Fortunately eight of the occupants escaped injury, but Mr Radford, who was also in the car, received injuries to his head and hand, as a result of which he was unable to resume work for tlie time: being.
