PAEROA BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING.

SUCCESSFUL PAST SEASON.

The twenty-third annual meeting of the Paeroa Bowling Club was held at the Soldiers’ Club on Wednesday night. In the absence of the retiring president (Mr P. Williams), for whom an apology was tendered, Mr E. Rewards presided over an attendance of

27 persons. ANNUAL REPORT. The following annual report was read by the secretary (Mr W. Purdie): “In presenting the annual report your Committee has- pleasure in stating that the- past season has in many ways compared favourably with other seasons. “Official Opening—Your Committee decided not to have such an event last season mainly owing to dates being taken up by sister clubs, and also for the reason that the Clothier

Shield and.. Goldfields Stars competition was played on our green. “The Green. —During the season the green was kept in its usual good conditio,i, and the thanks of your Committee arei due to the ca.retaker (Mr W. Hamilton) for the attention given to the green, thereby making it possible to have a good playing surface during the season.

“Membership.—There was- a slight falling-off of playing members last season, but it is hoped that new members will more than make up the deficiency in the new season. “Resignations.—During the season the- following resignations were received by your Committee and accepted with regret: Messrs Slyfield, Mayson, Carden, and Black. “Financial. —Your Committee by careful management is-able to show a small credit balance, which will be required to purchase further necessary equipment for afternoon tea, etc. “Inter-club Matches. —Six of these very enjoyable matches were played last season, and we won four and lost two. The two we lost were against Thames, where we, were defeated

rather badly. Those we won were against Waikino, Te Arbha (twice), and Morrinsvillq. “Clothier Shield and Goldfields Stars Competition.—Last Labour Day and the Saturday pi’evitus this competition was played on the Paeroa green. At the conclusion of section play it was found that the Paeroa team (Purdie skip) had won the A section and Hikutaia (Pinder skip) the- B section. In the final, after a strenuous game, Paeroa (McCullay, Power, Hamilton, Purdie-) defeated Hikutaia (H. Morrison, Alley, W. Morrison, Pinder) by 21 to 19. The Paeroa team, being the holders of the Stars, thus successfully defended them, and, in fact, went right through the two days’ play without a loss. The winners defended the Stars agaipst Waikino successfully, but had to strike their colours: to the Te Aroha team in the next game. Matamata are the present holders of the Stars. “Night-play.—The success looked for last year did not materialise, principally owing to the many wet evenings we had during the season. Your Committee trusts that better weather will prevail during the coming season, and having had the lights raised on the green, thereby hopes to make the play more enjoyable. “Club Competitions.—The following were the winners of the various competitions during last season : Brenan Shield, McDonald, Chamberlain, Mettam, Marsh (skip) ; A Grade Championship, T. L. Williams; B Grade Championship, C. Holes; Handicap Pairs, Chamberlain and Mettam. The First Years’ Championship was not played, there being no entries. “Holiday Tournaments. —Several of these- enjoyable games- were played off during the season and proved most successful. “•Open Tournaments. —At the Te Aroha tournament one of the Paeroa teams (W. Power skip) won the second prize, being beaten in the final by a team from Mt. Eden (Trayes s/kip). The other tournaments a.t which Paeroa. teams entered we ‘also started.’ “Champion of Champions.—This competition was again played on the Paeroa green, and after an enjoyable day R.- Vercoe (Waikino) proved the winner. “Bowl Testing. Instructions have been received from the S.A. Centre that bowls are liable to disqualification when playing in tournaments if they are not stamped 1925 or subsequent dates (official stamp). It behoves every member to make sure that this has been done before entering in open tournaments. “Obituary.—lt *is- with deep regret that your Committee advises that the Grim Reaper was busy again last season, the following old members passing over to the Great Majority: Messrs E. Shaw and C. Olson. “Thanks.—The thanks of the club are due to the president (Mr P. Williams), who at all times was ready and willing to help along the goodfellowship of the club, and who kindly donated the trophies for the night play ; to Mr G. Vowles, who donated

the B Grade trophy ; and to the General and Selection Committees for the considerable amount of time and trouble they put in to further the interests of the club. Thanks are also due to the ladies who so kindly came along and helped to dispense hospitality when the club was entertaining visitors-; also to the local Press your Committee desires to express appreciation and thanks for the valuable assistance given by publicity, thus keeping the bowling club before the public gaze. “In conclusion your Committee 'Sincerely trusts that every member had an enjoyable season, and that the coming season will be better still. This can only be accomplished by every member giving the incoming committee their moral support m l thereby helping to make the club a happy family.” The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £l4 ,7s 7d, also an excess of assets over liabilities amounting to £26 8s 7d. Subscriptions paid totalled £lo’B 13s. Attention was drawn by Mr W. Forrest to the fact that no mention had been made in the report recording his resignation as a selector. Mr Forrest explained that he had resigned

because he was “a great stickler for law and order,” and contended that the powers of the selection committee had been violated. As an instance he considered that the Goldfields Stars team had been selected by the general committee. His services were at the disposal of the club in any capacity, but he would not be a party to anything that was contrary to law and good order. To Mr G. P. de Castro the secretary stated that the £7 4s in the Post Office Savings Bank wps a sum which had been set aside for general provements. J

In answer to Mr W. T. Power the secretary said that practically all th® subscriptions shown as outstanding had been paid since the balance-sheet was compiled.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet ’Mr Edwards congratulated the club on its satisfactory position and the goodfellowship that had prevailed during the past season. The members had enjoyed many afternoons of good sport, and he felt sure they were all looking forward with pleasureable anticipation to the coming season. The club’s losses in the inter-club matches had been as- enjoyable as its wins. The thanks and congratulations of the members were due to their retiring president and commtitee for. the * splendid work they had done. In seconding, Mr de Castro expressed pleasure with the credit balance with which to comnince the season. The club owed nothing, and was in P very good position, and he hoped that by co-operation the harmony of the club would be .maintained. COMPETITIONS. Discussing the competitions for the Coming season, Mr C. T. Mettam said that he was not in favour of playing set fours in the Brena.n Shield games. After a full discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr J. M, Wilkinson, seconded by Mr W. N. Chamberlain, that fixed fours be played. On the motion of Mr W. H. Taylor it was decided that the selector b e empowered to substitute numbers 1 and 2 only in the fours. Other competitions decided upon were A and B grade championships and a first-year players’ competition, tion. CLUB COLOURS. Several members spoke with reference to the club colours and the dress of players, specially when playing in inter-club matches.

Mr de Castro suggested that when a team went away the members often looked a “scraggy” lot, owing to the lack of uniformity of dress. On the motion of Mr Forrest it was resolved that the committee be requested to recommend a definite style of blazer for members, to bei obtained within one month from opening day.

NEW MEMBERS ELECTED. The following new members were elected: Messrs J. Pinder, M. H. Chamberlain, and J. B. Whisker.

On the suggestion of Mr Towers it was decided that the election of all members in future would be by ballot.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The following officers .were elected . for the 1927-28 season :— -

Patron, Mr P. Williams ; president, Mr C. T. Mettam; vice-presidents, Messrs T. H. Hale- and J. W. Silcock; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Pur- „ die; auditor, Mr J. M. Wilkinson; general committee, Messrs L. Gibb, W. T. Power, and W. N. Chamberlain; sole selector, Mr G. P. de Castro; delegates to the- South Auckland Bowling Association, Messrs Mettam and Williams, who were also delegates to the Goldfields Association.

On relinquishing the chair in favour of Mr Mettam Mr Edwards congratulated him on his election as president, and expressed the hope that he would have a successful and enjoyable term of office.

In thanking the members the president said that he was conscious of the honour accorded him and rvould do his utmost to promote the be-st interests and goodfellowship of the members. He hoped to have the cooperation of all the members, and that a really good season would prevail. Other officers returned thanks for their election and express ?d their desire to do all they could to foster and promote interest in bowls. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. At the invitation of the president Mr Edwards presented the trophies won during the season. In congratulating the players on the henoius they had won the speaker paid particular reference to the fact that “Scotty” (F.) Marsh and his team had won the Brenan Shield two years

in succession. Hearty congratulations were also extended to the young players who by their enthusiasm and tenacity -of purpose- had won trophies.
