THEFT AT PAEROA.
PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEE.
TWELVE MONTHS’ DETENTION
‘Tt is regrettable to find a young man like you in the position in which you stand to-day,” said Mr, Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court at Auckland on , Monday to William Nealie of Paeroa, who had pleaded guilty to seven charges of theft committed while he was a Government servant.
Prisoner had been placed in a position of trust in the Public Works Department at the Puke, said His Honour. After acting as labourer for some time he became storekeeper, and moneys were paid to 'him. These moneys he put in his pocket, not only once, but on several occasions. These offences of theft from the public service unfortunately were coining before the Court too often, and probation was out of the question. Prisoner’s reputation in the past had been good*added His Honour. He ordered prisoner to be detained for reformative purposes for a period not exceeding 12 months.
