PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE, ROUTINE BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa District High School committee was held on Saturday night, the chaiiman (Mr W. T. Power) presiding over Messrs W. N. Chamberlain, J. H. McDonald, R. E. Thorp, C. H. Pascoe, W. Purdie, W. L. Lawrence (secretary), and G. H. Taylor (headmaster). REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE. On behalf of the visiting committee Mr Chamberlain reported that the fence surrounding the horse paddock was in need of repairs. The wooden fence near the infants’ room also required painting, and several desks were in need of minor repairs. It was resolved that the matter of obtaining estimates for painting the wood-work of the buildings be left in the hands of Mr McDonald and the secretary, with power to act. It was also resolved to obtain some spawla for the entrance to the horse paddock. ABOLITION OF BOARD. Reference was made by several members to the suggested curtailment by the Education Department of thefunctions of boards. On the motion of Mr McDonald, seconded by Mr Chamberlain, it was resolved : “That this committee strongly objects to the abolition or any curtailment of the powers-of the Auckland Education Board, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the department, the board, and the member for the district.” REMOVAL OF FENCE. It 'was reported by Mr McDonald that a suggestion had been put forward by the Mayor that, the Nahum Street fence of the new playing area should be moved from its present position farther out on to the roadside for a distance of about 16ft. If this was done he understood that the Borough Council and Beautifying Society would probably assist with the work. By moving the fence the cbmmitttee would gain a good area of level ground, and greater protection would be afforded the plantation of trees.

Mr Chamberlain moved that the council be thanked for its- suggestion and advised that the committee was not in favour. Mr Pascoe seconded the motion. The chairman pointed out that it was the desire of the Mayor to assist the committee and at the same time provide increased facilities,' for beautifying the school environs. ..As an amendment Mr McDonald moved that the committee favoured the suggestion, flnd saw no reason why the fence should not be moved provided the Thames Valley Electric Power Board had no objection to its wires being within the playing area, and that the Beautifying Society was prepared to supply sufficient trees to plant the new area, qnd subject to the consent of the Borough Council being obtained. The amendment was seconded by Mr Purdie and carried on a showing of hands'. EXTRA ASSISTANT. Reference was made to the removal of the extra assistant owing to the quarter’s attendance being below the average required. It was reported by Mr Taylor that, following upon representations made to the chairman of the board when he was in Paeroa, private advice had been received that an extra teacher would be appointed when school reopened after the forthcoming holidays.
