GAMES AT NGATEA.

TURUA AND WAITAKARURU DRAW

Turua v. Waitakaruru was the main Rugby attraction at Ngatea on Saturday last, and there was a Birge attendance of spectators. The game was not spectacular on account of the wetness of the field and the ball, but the interest was; sustained owing to the evenness of the teams and the hardness of the struggle. The teams lined out as follows : Waitakaruru. —F. Barlow, Woofe, C. Stretton, F. Walters, Bradley, D. Molesworth, J. Knox, G. Paton, Fitzpatrick, J. Ivan, D. Dalgety, C. Chirk, P. Clark, J. Millington, L. Barney.

Turua.—L. McCoid, R. Madgwick, 31. Madgwick, E. Johnston, L. Clotworthy, W. Blacklaws, J. Catlin, K. Fox, H. Hill, E. Booth, E. Hill, G. McCowatt, W. Clark, E. French, R. Hutchinson.

Waitakaruru kicked off. and play was fast and open in neutral teriitory. Waitakaruru received from a scrum and the backs got going, but McCoid with a speculator sent the ball back to midfield. Waitakaruru again attacked, and kept play in Turua’s territory. For carrying back a scrum was ordered under the posts and Turua was given a free kick. Waitakaruru secured from a line-out and a long kick was followed up, but French forced. Close play in midfield followed until Walters carried into Turua’s twenty-five, a fore® resulting. Stretton sent Waitakaruru on the attack and another scrum on the line took place. In close play the ball was taken to midfield and long kicking ensued until the change-over. Waitakaruru attacked in the second quarter, but ,7 long kick took play to the other end of the field, where Catlin failed to score from a mark. After a hard scramble the defenders forced. Waitakaruru worked up the field and play centred in Turua’s territory until a force was registered. In another attack MoleSiwortih failed with a penalty kick, and from a scrum on the line Turua relieved. Turua forced immediately on resuming after half-time, and play remained in that end ofi the field, and was very fast. The Turua forwards gradually worked up the field and a hard kick sent the ball over thiei de-ad-ball line. With Waitakaruru defending Johnston failed with a free kick. Waitakaruru worked down the field with line kicks, and play was in neutral territory when the bell rang. The final round opened with a Turua attack, McCoid returning many long kicks iii good style. Play remained in Waitakaruru’s' end until good line-kicking brought relief. Clotworthy sent Turua on the attack again, but from a throw-in the defenders forced. With play in midfield Stretton and Dalgety in a passing rush took play to Turua’s eind, a force resulting.

Time was called, and as no score had been registered the game was continued for 10 minutes. At the end of that time there was still no score, and play terminated.

Mr D. G. McMillan was referee. NGATEA V. TURUA B. The semi-final of the junior competition was played on an adjoining field between the Turua B team and Ngatea.

Turua kicked off and play centred in midfield. Ngta«a gradually gained ground, but lost it through infringements on several occasions. Turua had halt a dozen free kicks in its own territory and forced once during the quarter.

After changing over Ngatea followed up the kick-off. but in open play near the line faulty passing let Turua relieve. Ngatea returned to the attack, but a long kick by the defenders was mulled by the Ngatea backs and Turua broke away and compelled a force.

In the third quarter play was faster and ranged-up and down in neutral territory. After Ngatea had forced Killgour got in a good kick which was followed up, and Ngatea gained an obstruction try, awarded against Blacklaws for interfering with Kirkman. The kick failed. Ngatea 3. Turua B 0.

The last round did not see a change in the scores. Both teams adopted long kicking tactics and the forwards were tired out. Turua did most of the attacking. Mr J. Kidd was referee.
