Seven building permits for buildings to the value of £2BlO were granted at the Paeroa Borough Council meeting last night.

The revenue to the borough district fund account received during July amounted to £2700 17s lOd, including refunds of £5OO from loan accounts and a contribution of £675 towards the cost of the Criterion bridge from the Ohinemuri County Council. Accounts totalling £l5OB 12s 6d, including a payment to the Public Works Department of £675, were passed for payment at last night’s meeting of the. Borough Council.

Tiie hearing of the- appeals against the classification of land in the Haur.aki United Drainage District for rating purposes will be continued at the Magistrate’s Court, Thames, on Wednesday next. Tn all probability an effort will first be made to deal with the appeals already stated, before hearing further objections

The irregularity of the working ef time switches on some cf the street lights was mentioned by Ci. E. A. Porritt at the Borough Council meeting last night. Cr. F. E. Flatt stated that the electric clocks were not always definitely reliable, so he understood. However, an adjustment would always be made if reported to the Thames Valley Pouter Board’s office. The matter was referred to the town clerk to investigate.

Progress in connection with the metalling of the roads in the Patetonga district is very slow. Another step was made yesterday, when Cr. Mayn moved at the council meeting to seek the good offices of the Minister of Lands in endeavouring to get a £2 for £1 subsidy on giavei fol the back roads.

It was reported by the finance committee at last night’s Paeroa Borough Council meeting that the following loan accounts showed debit balances : Street improvement, £2104 16s Id; and house sewerage connections, £724 4s lid. At present credit balances were shown in the sewerage loan account, £193 12s Bd, county chambers account, £43 10s Bd, and the domain improvement account, £3 14s Id.

The receipts for the month of July of the Hauraki Plains County Council totalled £624 2s sd. Of this £407 2s lOd was from rates and £216 12s 7d from miscellaneoushsources, including £37 8s 10'd from the Pipiroa ferry and £34 4s 4d from the Komata ferry.

Some time ago a function was crganised by Mr J- Neate, of Ngatea, with the object of raising funds with which to provide .a piano for the Ngatea school. The function was a financial success, and yesterday the piano was placed in the school.

In answer to Cr. W. Turner, at the local Borough Council meeting last night the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) stated that motor vehicles could not legally be parked on the streets at night without being sufficiently lighted.

At last night’s meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) referred to the loss that the town and district had sustained by tiie- death of Mr A. D. McGuire. Deceased had been a public man of many years’ standing in the district, and for the best services that he had always cheerfully given a debt of deep gratitude was due. On the motion of the Mayor a resolution of condolence was accorded the widow and family, the resolution being carried in silence, the members standing.
