HOSPITAL REPORTS.

THE THAMES INSTITUTIONS.

PROGRESS DURING JULY

The following reports were subAiitted to Monday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital Board,: —

RESIDENT SURGEON’S REPORT. The resident surgeon, Dr. W. Sowerby, reported that 41 males- and 44 females had been admitted during July : 34 males and 47 females had been discharged, leaving 41 males .and 31 females in the institution at date. Fourteen out-patients had received treatment involving 72 attendances. Four males and one female had died from various causes dring the month. In a special report Dr. Sowerby stated: “This has been an excep'tonally busy month in all departments. The average daily bed state for July, was 74.7, the highest number on any one day was 80, and the lowest 70 patients.”

The acting-chairman (Mr J. W. Danby) said that in addition to the record number of patients 49 operations had been performed. MATRON’S REPORT. Tlie acting-matron (Sister E. I. Davies) reported that ten patients had been admitted to tJhe maternity annexe and 10 babies born. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr A. M. Sommerville) reported that steam had been in use continuously in all parts of the institution for the full 24 hours daily during the month. The steam laundry ha.d also been in full use. The coal tally for the month was 58 tons 7cwt. The chairman drew attention to the heavy supplies of coal required for the new laundry. In order to economise he thought that the matron might arrange for having t>he washing days reduced to two. The present excessive cost was partly due, no doubt, to the machinery being new, and the staff not being familiar with the work. The suggestion was referred to the chairman and secretary, with power to act. DISTRICT HOMES. The superintendent of the District Homes, Tararu, reported that there were 19 mqle and 1 female inmates in the homes at date, and tihe work on the fam had been carried on satisfactorily as weather nermitted. COMMITTEE’S REPORT. The special report submitted by the Homes Committee on the reorganisation of the staff was taken in committee. . On resuming in open meeting, t'lie report was referred to the committee, with power to act. NURSE TO NATIVES. Th district nurse to natives (Nurse J. M. Jarrett) reported that she had attended 20' cases during the month. The Puriri and Hoe-o-Tainui schools had been visited. Eleven Maori pahs had been visited during the month and lectures given on colds and treatment, and general conditions with regard to health. PATETONGA NURSE. The Patetonga district nurse (Nurse L. McNamara) reported (having attended seven cases during the month.
